Don't Forget The Focal Point in Your Art and Photographs

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 196

Keeping your focal point in mind when painting is just one of many things to remember whether you are painting or drawing. There is a lot to learn when embarking on the path to becoming a good artist, but the focal point is something that is not that hard to remember, and could make a big difference in your work.

Lately, It seems like someone is trying to tell me something. As I continue on my journey to becoming a better painter, the term "focal point" has been popping up constantly. I think it would be fair to say there have been times when I could have taken advantage of using this principle, and I plan to do better at that from now on.

The focal point of a piece of artwork is the place you use to attract a viewer's attention; it is essentially the point you are trying to get across. It's where you put the hardest edge, the greatest contrast, the richest texture, the brightest color, and anything else you desire. Your point can be bright and bold, but it can also be subtle.

A focal point of a painting is similar to conveying a point in a conversation. Sometimes you want to be short and to the point; other times you require a big presentation to make your point known. And sometimes you may just have to shout at the top of your lungs.

You can make your f.p. anything you want it to be, as long as it's effective. Remember you want the viewer's eye to move around your piece, not only stay in one spot. You could even have more than one focal point to keep it interesting, but be sure the message you're trying to get across doesn't become lost.

Think of some of your favorite paintings or sculptures, or go open up one of your favorite art books and take a fresh look at some of the work. Look for that point of interest in the art and see if your favorite works have an obvious one. Maybe there is even more than one center of interest. Representational work will probably be more inclined to follow this "rule", but you may see focal points in abstract art too.

The same goes for photography as well.

Have you been guilty as I have in kind of neglecting the use of a primary focal point in your work? Trying to shove a whole lot of stuff in your drawings or paintings? If so, before you start your next piece, how about pausing a moment to ask yourself "What is the most important part of this piece? What is the focal point?" It just may help your work get a little bit better, and you will thank yourself for it.

One last piece of information that could help you: the human eye can only see one small three-dimensional object at once, and everything else around and behind that object appears blurry. Maybe we should follow nature's lead and make a painting that way too.
