Your Body's Warning System - PAIN

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

Pain is a characteristic of 2,186 disease conditions according to one medical resource. This contrasts with some people who experience no pain whatever. Wouldn't it be great to live your life without pain? NO, not really! Pain is your body's communication method to alert you when something is wrong.

Some social circles express an endorsement for the people who can perform through pain. The admiration intensifies as the pain intensifies for someone who struggles on. In contrast, there is often a negative view of those people who have a greater sensitivity to pain - especially if they are limited by pain.

We all need to know that pain is a message. Pain is our brain telling us that something is so very wrong that our health and well-being are being threatened.

Acute pain

My friend's grandmother used to have a saying that applied to pain and many other areas of life including work, play and relationships: "If the stove is too hot, take your hand off of it!"

We take our hand off of a hot stove because of something we call a withdrawal reflex. We will withdraw our hand or foot from a painful experience even before we know what is hurting us. In acute (short-term) pain, removing the trigger is extremely important. Common causes of acute pain are:

  • Trauma
  • Toxins
  • Deficiencies
  • Stress

Constant pain

Some pain persists even when you "take your hand off the stove." This constant pain is called chronic (long-term) pain. Chronic back pain and chronic headaches persist long after the trauma that caused them is removed. Often there is no specific nerve damage. The pain just starts and won't go away.

This occurs because of the way our nerves are created. You see, nerves don't really experience pain; they just sense stimulation. Our brain interprets the stimulation as pain. The body has precise nerve fibers that "fire" under exact conditions. One group of fibers may be triggered by a sharp jab, another group by dull pressure. One group may be triggered by heat and another by extreme cold. The nerve fibers carry a specific message to the brain for interpretation. Our brain interprets the signal as painful. The quantity of signals helps us determine the pain's intensity.

The Route of Chronic Pain:

  1. The "pain" signal goes from the nerve ending to the spine.
  2. From the spine it travels to the brain for comprehension.
  3. Then a return signal goes back along that route: from brain to spine and from spine to nerve ending. This message from the brain is supposed to shut off the pain signal once the irritation is gone.

With chronic pain, the return signal does not switch off. It is amplified, instead!

You may have heard a loudspeaker screech when a microphone is place too close to it. The amplified signal is played through the speaker again and picked up by the microphone again - and the signal repeats louder than before.

Nerves can amplify pain signals, and the signals don't have to come from the nerve endings. Certain conditions may cause random signals to be amplified and project pain to a perfectly healthy nerve ending. Remember, it is the interpretation of the intensity of this signal that we call pain.

Breaking the Pain Cycle

If the nerves themselves are causing the pain, you must help repair the nerve to get relief from the pain. This can be accomplished with specific nutrients, with physical medicine (e.g., chiropractic, acupuncture, massage), and with various nerve therapies like nerve formula.

It is more often that acute and chronic pain comes from a mixed bag of imbalances caused by trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress. These cause lead to inflammation. To relieve the pain you must deal with the cause(s) and any associated inflammation.

Remove Inflammation

Most healthy fats are anti-inflammatory. Omega-3s block inflammation and pain similarly to aspirin but are much safer. Omega 6 and 9 - such as Evening Primrose oil and Perilla seed oil - block inflammation at the source and help keep runaway inflammation from overwhelming us. Other good sources of healthy fats include some fish, nuts, and oils.

Eliminate Stress

When stress is a significant trigger of the pain, deep breathing exercises can help reduce the impact of stress and increase oxygen to the painful area. Many stress-induced migraines, neck and back pain can be relieved this way.
