Tips for Healthier Joints

Learning how to care for your joints and bones is a very important part of taking care of the body, especially as it ages. Joint pain affects millions of Americans everyday. Living with joint pain can make the simplest tasks, such as opening a door, an extremely painful experience. This type of pain is usually attributed to arthritis, which may seem inevitable as we age, but is very much avoidable. Here are a few simple, everyday tips to help take better care of your joints and guard against arthritis and joint injuries.

The joint is technically the connection between two bones cushioned by cartilage. Joint pain occurs when wear and tear decreases cartilage and bones begin rubbing against each other, so it is important to make sure the muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding the joints are strong and stable.

Exercising is the first step to healthier joints. Extra pounds can weigh down the skeleton and cause joint stress as we walk and move. Exercising decreases body weight, strengthens muscles and can also reduce joint swelling. The increase in muscle mass supports joints, helping towards more fluid movement also reduces the pressure on joints. Strong muscles and routine exercises not only support joints, but also improve balance and reduces the risk of damaging or hurting joints in an accident.

Stretching and performing exercises like yoga are also very important in caring for joints. These types of movements can help strengthen joints and also stretch them out. This also helps avoid the likelihood of muscle rips and tears, which can be unfortunately common in the joint area.
