4 Tips to Care for Your Slipped Disc Injury

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 175

Care for a slipped disc injury is often simple. A short period of pure rest and medication is usually sufficient. For slightly more serious cases, physical therapy may be required. About 5% of the patients will not recover and will thus require further treatment such as injections or even surgery. For the 95% who recover, they are often able to return to pre-injury levels.

A hot compress may be applied on the back to relieve pain if swelling is not present. Heat will help to relieve muscular tightness and increase the elasticity of the muscles and connective tissues, significantly reducing pain. However if swelling or inflammation is present, do not use a hot compress. Apply a hot compress for 15 minutes. If possible, use a moist hot compress as it penetrates the skin better than pure dry heat.

If there is inflammation or swelling present, use a cold compress. A cold compress will effectively numb the nerve and slow down the inflammation process, providing almost immediate pain relief. Cold compresses also constrict the blood vessels which in turn decreases pain. Apply a cold compress for 15 minutes and reapplication may be done after the skin has gone back to normal body temperature.

Change of lifestyle

To reduce further stress to the back, having a balanced diet and exercising regularly will help to improve back pain. Physical therapist will impart strengthening exercises to strengthen the spine and flexibility exercises may also be taught. Take things easy during the first few days and start slowly with the exercises. Do not rush into it as it may further aggravate your condition. Avoid any heavy lifting activities as well.

If the pain is unbearable, medication may be prescribed by a qualified practitioner. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and painkillers may be prescribed to relief pain. For patients who suffer from spasms, muscle relaxants may also be prescribed. NSAIDs are usually prescribed for long term pain relief and conrol.

Steroid injections will help to provide a longer pain relief as compared to medication. Through injection, swelling will be reduced. Injections will be done through the usage of fluoroscopy to identify the target area.

With normal treatment, most people are able to return back to their pre-injury levels. However, 5% of patients may continue to suffer from back pain even after receiving treatment. Recovery time usually range from several months to a few years depending on the patient and activities conducted. Activities which require exerting stress on the back should be avoided and the lives of patients may have to change to accommodate it.
