Air Freight Forwarders Vs Freight Carriers - 5 Ways They Are Different

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

If you or your company needs to ship items locally, nationally or internationally, then you must deal with air freight forwarders and freight carriers. At a basic level, a freight forwarder is a person or company that organizes shipments for individuals or corporations. The forwarder will then contact the air freight carrier to help with the movement of goods. The following 5 points further highlight some of the main differences between forwarders and carriers.

1. The first way that forwarders are different from carriers is that they are the ones largely responsible for an individual's or a company's shipments. They plan and organize how to get large orders from manufacturers or producers to the market or the final point of distribution. They are the people who start the whole process by communicating with clients, warehouses and freight carriers around the world.

2. A second difference is that a freight carrier, as the name suggests, is the individual or group responsible for the actual movement of the goods from one point to another. This can be done with airplanes, as well as ships, trucks and trains. Air carriers will pick up and deliver to businesses centers around the world and are extremely fast and reliable; ocean freight carriers sail from major ports worldwide and are great for oversize goods; train freight carriers are a cost-effective solution to shipping goods; and road freight carriers are also effective and include LTL (less-than-truckload) and truckload services.

3. The third difference is if an air freight forwarder is dealing with international sales and goods, then they will arrange cargo movement to various international locations. This requires a deep knowledge in commercial invoices, bills of landing, export declarations and other issues related to import and export regulations. They are also responsible for making sure that the goods a client is exporting or importing gains entry into a country.

4. The fourth difference is that if a carrier is based in the United States and handles domestic U.S. goods, then it must be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. This ensures that the employees are personally responsible for physically transporting any and all goods from origin to destination.

5. The last difference is that a forwarder is responsible for arranging for the transportation of his or her customer's goods, meaning that they must contract one or various carriers for their clients. A professional and savvy forwarder will also provide advice on all documentation and customs requirements in the country of destination. If they are not able to be overseas, then they should have a corresponding agent to keep them informed of matters related to the goods being shipped.

Both air freight forwarders and air freight carriers are integral components to a company's success. They give you the capacity to expand your business and to reach clients all over the world. An experienced staff should be able to design effective solutions for you and your company, allowing for a hassle-free and fulfilling experience.
