5 Tips for Motivating Virtual Employees

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 166

If you have been online for any length of time and are making money, then you perhaps have a virtual employee or are thinking in that line. The current trend is to get one from an English speaking country, thousands of miles away, where wages are still low. What most employers have not grasped is that these employees also need to be motivated to produce more. The traditional methods like providing tea during breaks, giving small presents, or facilitating team building retreats may not work online. You need to be a little creative getting your virtual employees feeling appreciated. Here are some tips...

1. Set a good example. You may not realize it, but employees though many miles away will 'see' your behavior and attitude. They can tell if you have a 'know it all attitude' or a caring personality providing a fatherly or motherly 'love'. Employees will feel motivated when you are caring, open to hearing them and keep your word. Pay them when you promise you will. Listen to their grievances and concerns and they will respect you and boost your business output.

2. Keep them happy. It takes more muscles to frown than to smile and laugh. Happiness, laughter is important for everybody's well-being. In addition, a happy person is likely to be more productive than one who is disgruntled. So keep you staff happy. And the best way to do it is to be happy yourself-it is contagious. Even if a virtual employee has done a blunder, you don't have to give a rant for one week.

3. Give them a share of the business success. If your business has made a bumper harvest in one year, give them a bonus. After all they are the ones who have worked hard to make it a success. They will work harder next time to make even more. In addition, even before you give monetary rewards; praise them for the good work done.

4. Empathize and be human all the time. This sound obvious, but it is often ignored or totally forgotten. If your virtual employee tells you that he has lost his grandmother and will take a day off to attend her burial, do not withhold his pay for that day. I mean these are facts of life why not empathize and perhaps send $20 to assist in funeral expenses. Small acts like this go a long way in cementing relationships and increasing productivity.

5. Provide training. Assess each employee's skills and shortcomings and hold discussions with them. Pay for online solutions that give employees learning lessons the can be used in the business. It could be a course, video training or even an ebook. Perhaps you want your assistants to do more marketing your business on Facebook, buy them a good ebook that gives key strategies.
