Pick Your Own Fresh Food in the Outer Banks

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

When we go on vacation, we are very particular about food. Rarely will you find us settling for a drive-through restaurant when our destination offers a variety of cuisines and flavors indigenous to the region. Beach vacations, like our regular jaunts to the Currituck Outer Banks, allow us to sample the local markets and cook up something with fresh fruits and vegetables. You might think the Outer Banks doesn't offer much in the way of farm-grown goodness, but you'll be surprised to know what you can buy in season. Hopefully this short guide to "pick your own" sports and farmer's markets will have you ready to plan a menu to go along with your vacation.

What do the locals in the OBX eat? If they are health-conscious, you're likely to find them here:

Powells Roadside Markets - You'll see the multitude of signs featuring the smiling, waving farmer before you get there. The big Powells market is located in Sligo, just north of the populated beach areas, and opens in April to offer a generous crop of good food. Strawberry season in the region happens in May, and you can pick your own here. You can also pick up homemade jams and jellies, relishes and fudge, and autumn brings fresh pumpkins in time for the holidays. 252-232-2547

Martin Vineyards - Knotts Island offers visitors gorgeous views of the bay, and when you come to Martin Vineyards to sample some home grown wine you can also pick fruit in season. Peaches, apples, pumpkins, and grapes are available during their respective growing seasons. Last time I visited with my daughter we brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. 252-429-3542

Coinjock Creek Farms - This working farm is popular with visitors and offers one of the most diverse selections of vegetables and fruits. You can pick your own depending on availability or buy as packaged, and you can also choose from a selection of fresh eggs, herbs, preserves and nuts. Call ahead at 252-267-3332 for hours.

Point Harbor Strawberries - When strawberry season comes to "fruition" (no pun intended), you'll find locals with baskets choosing the ripest in the patch. The strawberry patches and farms in Virginia and North Carolina operate mainly from April until everything is gone - and this of course depends on the growing season. If you are in the area in late spring and want some fresh strawberries, call ahead at 252-491-8266 for directions and times.

When you come to the Outer Banks for vacation or to stay, there's plenty of fresh, healthy food to eat. Fire up the grill and enjoy.
