Peru's Feathered Treasures - The More the Merrier

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

From the small and delightful to the big and majestic, the sheer diversity of Peru's ornithological treasures are among the reasons it is a popular country for bird-watching walking holidays. Peru has many bird species to spot, and new ones are continually being discovered every year in its cloud forests, jungles, mountains and valleys. For this reason alone, it is one of the places in the world you are most likely to cross off many items on your bird-watching sightings list! More Birds For The Buck!

The numbers are enough to convince the most avid bird watchers to book their walking holidays. Peru has around 1,800 registered species (close to 20% of the world's total and more than those found in North America and Europe combined), of which more than 300 are endemic. What's more, it holds the record for the most species documented in a single area- 650 were noted in the area surrounding a lodge in the jungles of Tambopata.

It also holds the record for the highest number of species seen in a single day - 361 somewhere around the Cocha Cash, Manu. This means that for bird-watchers looking for productive walking holidays, Peru may perhaps be the destination that offers the most birds for the buck!

Biodiversity- Peru's Amazing Habitats

The ecological and geographic diversity of this country is definitely what makes it paradise for birders on walking holidays. Peru is a country where one side is the coast of the Pacific Ocean and parched deserts, and the other side spills over to the cloud forests of the Amazon. In the middle there is scrubland, jungles and forests as well as the snowcapped peaks of the Andes.

In fact, of 104 life zones known in the world, 84 are in Peru, including almost every type of habitat imaginable. On this list are different types of forests and jungles, home to an abundance of flora and fauna- mammals, butterflies, insects and more. Given this wealth of natural resources, conservation is definitely a top priority- leading to many efforts towards this end. These include the setting aside of 13% of the total land area for natural preserves and conservation sites, as well as reclamation of swampland and cleaning of the waterways.

What To Expect On Walking Holidays- Peru's Amazing Birds

The newly-discovered Scarlet-Banded Barbet- one of the species that have only been recently documented- or the magnificent male Marvellous Spatuletail and the extremely rare White-Bellied Cinclode (only 28 known in existence) are among the interesting feathered friends one may encounter in the boggy forests.

If canyon trails are on the agenda, Peru's pride, the Andean Condor as well as the beautiful Andean Cock-of-the-Rock are the birds you may most likely meet. Then of course, there are the thousands of macaws, parrots, exotic hummingbirds, cotingas, antbirds and rare endemics to see. It truly is the birder's paradise!
