Doing A Grand Canyon 1-Day Smooth-Water Float Trip

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

The Grand Canyon is a very lovely place. It is in the state of Arizona and comprises about two hundred and seventy-seven miles in length. Millions of people visit it each year for its beauty and relaxing atmosphere. In the Colorado River, which divides the canyon, people enjoy smooth-water rafting. In fact, these float trips are so popular that many consider them to be the best one-day activity you can do while visiting the South Rim.

These rafting tours run from March through November. They depart from Grand Canyon National Airport in Tusayan, the town that sits minutes from the front gates of the main entrance. Do not confuse these smooth-water adventures with the more treacherous white-water rafting expeditions. You will not experience any rough water during float trips.

Make sure to reserve your rafting tour in advance as these trips have become very popular. I usually recommend booking them a week or two in advance. It's not surprising to meet a traveler who's reserved their seats a year in advance. Part of the issue here are the motorized rubber pontoon boats - they seat only 19 people.

Pricing for these tours are not terribly expensive. Of course, each tour operator will set his or her rates accordingly. However, expect to pay less than a couple hundred dollars on the most basic packages, which typically include Park fees, lunch, water, river guide and bus transportation from the airport to Glen Canyon Dam (the starting point for all smooth-water trips) and back.

I've heard many visitors praise the trip that includes a plane ride to Page, AZ, and a Jeep tour to Antelope Canyon, which is famous for its "slot canyons." Once this side-trip is done, these adventurers rejoin the main group for the river tour. If you have the budget, I'd recommend booking this one. The aerial views are spectacular and the Antelope side-trip is world-class.

There is so much wildlife to see when you are on this type of excursion. It is quite memorable especially if you go with family (kids as young as 4 years of age can take this trip). You can take photos and keep it in a journal and album forever. What a keepsake that will be. I know from personal experience that I still talk about floating past Horseshoe Bend.

There are no requirements to wear a life vest but I recommend you error on the side of caution. Other things to bring along include a hat, sunglasses, a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, sport sandals, sunscreen, lip balm, salty snacks and water. I also recommend packing a dry bag with an extra set of clothes. The bus ride back is about two hours and you will want to be dry and comfortable.

In addition, to reserving your trip in advance, I highly recommend you book your seats online. It nearly goes without saying these days that the best rafting deals are on the Internet, and float tours are no different. Beware that the great deals you see on the Web are Internet-only promotions. If you fail to complete your transaction on the website, you'll end up paying full retail price. Not a good thing, especially when you can use the savings to purchase spectacular Native American handicrafts at the Cameron Trading Post on the return part of your journey.
