De-Clutter Today, Start With These 3 Items

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Want to de-clutter your home but not sure where to start? The clutter often feels like a mountain we can't climb. However, a mountain is scaled one step at a time. The same is true with our clutter. This article will highlight 3 items to de-clutter today.

The first items to de-clutter are duplicates and extras

Walk out to your garage or toolshed. How many shovels or hoes do you have? How many do you realistically need? Get rid of the extras.

We often accumulate multiples of an item without realizing it. This can be because we can't find the item when we need it or possible because we think we need several but later find we don't. By reducing clutter it will be easier to find the items you already have when you need them. Do this task again in your kitchen, office, and even your closet!

Next, de-clutter items you don't plan to use in the next year

How many items do you have that are only used every few years? This could be a carpet steam cleaner or a special curling iron. There might be an important reason to keep a few of them items, but most can be let go.

When the item is needed simply ask a friend to borrow it. Some items can be rented when they are needed. For example, Home Depot rents tools.

Do you have kitchen gadgets that looked great and you thought they would save time? But in practice you find they aren't being used? Most likely you can accomplish the same task with a bit more manual effort so let those gadgets go.

Third, tackle magazines & other papers

Do you have a collection of magazines you want to read someday? Maybe you want it for one tip, article or recipe. So often these magazines pile up and collect dust. They sit as a reminder of what we meant to do but haven't gotten to. (i.e. reading them or using the information).

If there is an article for something you truly want to keep from the magazine tear it out and keep just that page. Better yet, scan it into your computer. You will find it easier later and rid yourself of paper clutter.

The same is true with other papers. There is no need to keep old utility bills. Take 5 minutes a day and start clearing out the piles of bills and papers you have laying around. By all means spend more time if you like. However, tackling a little at a time keeps the task manageable.

Starting in these 3 areas can make a huge difference. You will probably find your mountain is now only a hill, de-clutter on.
