Home Clutter-How to Get Rid of It

No one likes to walk into a home that's cluttered. It can give visitors a feeling of claustrophobia and make them feel overwhelmed. Often the person living in such a house doesn't realize how bad the clutter has become, and has no idea of the affect it's having on their visitors. Keeping your home clutter free is a lot easier than you think, no matter how overwhelming it is.

Step That Make it Easy

Don't try to fix Rome in a day. Take it one step at a time. It could be 30 minutes a day or an hour broken up to a half-hour in the morning and a half-hour in the afternoon.

Every time you make a new purchase you should consider removing something in the home. People who have worked this method put the new piece in place and wrap the old piece in paper and place it in a box. Add this to your schedule removal of clutter and in a year you could have a fantastic garage sale.

If you have children, then it's time to get them involved in the process. Although they will moan and groan about more chores, all you need to do is think of fun ways to make it a special occasion. If it's only a half hour then consider letting them play their own music as loud as they want so they can dance while they work. You of course will be wearing ear plugs.

Also, when you have children, it's a good idea to start young and teach them how to sort their things and develop a closet system that makes it even easier for them. When you start them early it will follow them throughout their lives.

Consider teaching your children the benefits of hanging clothes properly in their closet. Sort them by blouses, the shortest, skirts, a little longer and followed by long pants. They can even go further and use a color system for each item. If they love shoes then by all means be sure to install a shoe tree or some other means to easily put their shoes away.

When you start to un-clutter your home it's a good idea to think in terms of "when did I last use this." If you're worried you might throw out something you may need latter, then put things in a box, label the box and keep it for another six months. After that, and now a year and a half, it's definitely time to throw the box out.

Kitchens are one of the worst places for clutter but they don't have to be. If things are sorted into most needed to less needed then that's half the battle. The things used most often need to be placed in the space closest to where you'll be using them.

Then of course there's the dreaded refrigerator. It you can get into a routine of cleaning one-quarter of it every week you'll soon find you have a lot of things to throw out in the beginning and after that cleaning the refrigerator will be much easier.

Today's homes are becoming large than ever before and this leaves you wide open for loads of clutter. Nothing is more overwhelming than attics that are filled with "things", basements where every nail and screw is somewhere and storage units that are rarely visited. In time you feel like you're becoming a hostage to your "things."

Learning to get rid of clutter is not only a mentally healthy thing to do; it can also turn out to be a profitable thing when you hold your garage sale. Some have been lucky enough to sell enough clutter to pay for a family vacation. Take back your life and get rid of your clutter today.
