Free MMOs That You Can Play in Your Browser

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 105

Browser games have not only become incredibly popular recently, they have evolved to offer new features such as 3D graphics and multiplayer. This allows players to have a complete gaming experience without the need for discs or long downloads. And among those the most played are the MMO games, pitting thousands of players against each other. So let's check out some of the best free-to-play MMOs available.

Free Realms

Developed by Sony Online Entertainment, Free Realms was a surprise hit on the world on online games. Unlike most games on its genre, it features a colorful fantastical world with cartoon-like qualities that manages to please both kids and adults. And instead of focusing only on battles, Free Realms gives the players several activities to choose from.

There are currently fifteen jobs to choose from: Ninja, Soccer Star, Fisherman, Archer, Chef, Wizard, Kart Driver, Medic, Postman, Blacksmith, Demolition Derby Driver, Warrior, Brawler, Miner and Card Duelist. The best part is that each job has a completely unique gameplay, guaranteeing there is always something different to do in-game. In fact, the Card Duelist job is so deep that it could be a full game on its own.

A note to parents: this game is completely kid-friendly. All names and interactions are pre-approved by Sony, so there is no risk of inappropriate content. Recommended for parents that want to play with their kids.

Realm of the Mad God

A retro co-op fantasy MMO shooter. Just by reading the game's description players know they are in for a unique experience. Featuring 8-bit graphics and gameplay that is similar to Robotron and Geometry Wars, Realm of the Mad God stands out among browser MMOs. But don't let the retro graphics fool you, this game is modern in every other way. Players hunt for loot in several enormous dungeons, while others trade for it in the cities, with dozens or hundreds of players on-screen at once.

The other feature that differentiates it from other MMOs is its hardcore system: when a player dies the character dies permanently. While it seems harsh at first, it also encourages gamers to unlock and experiment with other classes. And just to help out, players can put their rarest loot in chests to avoid losing it upon death.

This game is recommended for both old-school players that will enjoy the style of graphical and gameplay, as well for those that want to experience a more action based MMO.

Critter Forge

For fans of Pokemon and Monster Rancher, this is a great option to battle with monsters online. In Critter Forge you can raise and train creatures and use then in battles with other players. It is also possible to breed creatures to create new critters that posses the traits of its parents.

The game features some gorgeous anime-like graphics. And, as with all pets, you have to take constant care of your critter to keep it happy and healthy.

Runescape

Runescape is such a huge hit that it's hard to find a MMO gamer that did not play it at some point. Released in 2001, it is one of the most popular free MMOs, with over 150 million registered players.

One of the features that keep players coming back for it is its sheer amount of content. Being constantly updated for over a decade, Runescape has a myriad of quests, items and activities to keep players busy for a long time. The game also does not have classes, since all players start the same, leveling skills by performing then. This allows a high degree of customization for your character. You could, for example, decide not to fight at all, becoming a miner/baker.

The fact that it remained so popular for such a long time is proof both of its quality as of the staying power of browser MMOs.
