The Challenges and Value of Slow Monotonous Professor Lectures

June 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

Not long ago, I was considering all of the university level lectures I've been watching online over the past few years. The variety and number has proliferated, and it's almost as if you can learn anything you want to learn online, for free, any time you want, all you have to do is pay attention, listen, and put in the time and effort to do so. Okay so let's talk because there's something that I have noticed that I think is of value, and it might even be something you've noticed yourself.

You see, some of the lectures are by very famous professors, and a few of them are getting rather old, and they are slow and monotonous in their delivery. Obviously, if you are an ADHD, bipolar, text messaging, social networking extravaganza of the X'er generation, then that certainly isn't going to work for you. You will get bored, your mind will turn off, drift in and out of consciousness, and you won't learn a damn thing. That may be true, but there is something else you should consider before we nix those somewhat boring professors and their lectures.

If the speaker is highly animated, and highly energetic and supercharged, then yes they are entertaining you and keeping your attention, but they are also not giving you time to think because they are doing all the entertaining and your mind is just soaking up the entertainment features rather than drifting in and out of other thought. The slow and monotonous professor gives your mind time to think, and that allows you to better grasp the concept of the wisdom they are departing. Let me give you an example.

MIT has some great online videos for their engineering aerospace class. They often have older NASA engineers in their 80s come and speak. They are slow in their speech, and somewhat monotone, but those lectures really make you think, and they are very valuable to watch. No, they are entertaining, although their dry sense of humor is funny if you are paying attention. Nevertheless, it is my belief after listening to all the TED videos, and some of the younger energetic professors, along with the slow and boring ones, that it is important to mix it up a little bit.

Don't be so quick to turn off those professors which appear to be boring because they just might make you think, and allow your brain to really work while you're considering all that they're talking about. If you just watch TV, you are being entertained, but if your mind is racing and thinking along with the subject matter being presented then you are getting a whole lot more education in the process, and it is good practice to get your brain to think this way. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
