Life Threatening Morbid Obesity Problems

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

Morbid obesity is one of the fastest growing medical issues of recent times. More and more people are becoming excessively large due to more sedentary lifestyles and the easy access of junk food.

An individual is considered morbidly obese if they have a Body-Mass-Index (BMI) of forty or over. These individuals are incredibly overweight and the excess fat they carry around with them has serious life-threatening consequences.

So what are the problems associated with morbid obesity?

The list of medical issues related to the condition is immense. This is because every area of the body is adversely affected when an individual is excessively large. Every major organ is stressed and strained to the point of possible breakdown within the body of a morbidly obese individual. The number of problems related to morbid obesity are enormous. From persistent and subtle diseases like hypertension and diabetes to more obvious conditions like cardiac disease, respiratory abnormalities, gastrointestinal problems, renal failure, hormonal disorders, arthritis... the number of diseases is nearly endless.

Any one of the diseases could lead to complications which could eventually be life-threatening. The longer an individual remains excessively large the higher the likelihood of them developing a life-threatening disease.

Of all the problems that could affect a morbidly obese person, the diseases to watch out for are the subtle ones. Diabetes and hypertension can be extremely life-threatening if it isn't diagnosed in time. For example type II diabetes (which occurs when the glucose level in blood is too high) is related to other risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol which then leads to more serious illnesses such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Morbidly obese people are more likely to develop diabetes and as a consequence they are more susceptible to the many complications related to the condition.

Morbid obesity is a very serious life-threatening disease and everything should be done to treat it is as soon as possible. There are a number of steps that an individual could take to ensure that they do not become too obese. They need to make sure that they remain as active as possible. They should try and adopt some kind of exercise routine or better still regularly participate in some kind of sporting activity (of course they should seek professional advice first before undergoing a fitness regime). More importantly they should make sure that they have a healthy diet. Their diet should be balanced, containing a variety of fruits and vegetables. Processed foods should be limited and they should make sure that the amount of food they eat is within their recommended daily calorie intake.
