Resveratrol Sources Can Be Found In Six Common Foods - Do You Get Enough Resveratrol In Your Diet?

July 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 214

If you are like me you probably spent many of your younger years without any knowledge of resveratrol. You will find that there are mixed reviews about the health benefits provided by this phytoalexin or polyphenolic compound which is an antioxidant. My guess is that you are not getting much of this compound in your diet because resveratrol sources in food we eat are limited.

Actually there are about 70 plants that contain resveratrol, however most of them are non-edible.

The six common foods containing this phytoalexin, though in relatively low amounts, are:

  1. Grapes, particularly red grapes
  2. Peanuts
  3. Blueberries
  4. Bilberries
  5. Cranberries
  6. Cocoa

Red wines are considered a good source of this antioxidant because the red grape skins are left on during the fermentation process of red wines, whereas the white grape skins are removed before the fermentation process of white wines. The fermentation process also affects the type and concentration of resveratrol in the wine.

When you ingest this ingredient orally it is well absorbed by humans but is rapidly metabolized and eliminated from the body.

Supplementation is presently a major source of dietary consumption. It is not known to be toxic but no dose limits for consumption or disease prevention have been determined.

Japanese knotweed root is the main resveratrol source for supplements. This plant has a much higher concentration of this antioxidant than other food sources. Supplements usually contain 10 - 50 mg per dose.

Since few human research studies have been done and little definitive data exists confirming the benefits of this element, I take a nutritional supplement with 10 mg combined with balanced amounts of 70 other vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

This may not be a case where some is good and a lot is better. I hope you consult your physician and conduct your own investigation of available research before taking a single concentrated supplement.

Make no mistake about it, the best resveratrol sources will always be natural sources, of which the main six are listed above. Eating a balanced diet of fresh, vine-ripened fruits and vegetables should be priority number one when your desire is to fight disease and promote good health.

I agree with Mark Hyman, MD. "Chronic disease is a foodborne illness. We ate our way into this mess, and we must eat our way out."
