The Importance of a Certified Nursing Assistant

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

A certified nursing assistant is a person who helps the patients to complete their daily activities till they are discharged from the hospital or the medical organization. They generally work under and report to a nurse. They take care of the patients and report the patient's improvements to the concerned nurse or the doctor. It is not necessary for a CNA to work in a hospital or a medical organization; they can also travel to the patient's home and serve the patient there. Such types of CNAs are called traveling CNAs.

A nursing aide has a very important role to play in the hospital, nursing home, or any other medical organization. They serve as the link between the doctors or nurses and the patients. They report the vital signs like blood pressure, temperature, breathing rate, heart beat etc., to the concerned nurse or the doctor and also notify them about the patient's improvement. Apart from this, a CNA is responsible for the administration of the prescribed medicines through intravenous injections, catheters, enemas or massages to the patient. They also change dressings or bandages of the wounds for the patient.

Moreover, they have to attend to each and every small need of the patient. They have to help the patient change clothes, take bath, brush teeth, eat food, drink water, take medicines, sleep etc. A CNA is also has to make sure that the patient's room is clean, sanitized and well ventilated. As mentioned above, the nursing aide can also travel to the patient's home and help him get well. In such cases, the traveling nursing assistant is expected to cook food, wash clothes and utensils and do the other house work for the patient, if the patient is not able to do so and that he / she is living alone.

Any certified nursing assistant can find a good job in nursing homes, hospitals, medical institutions, or other medical organizations. But before they find a job, they have to complete the CNA certification and get the license to find different nursing jobs and work as a certified nursing assistant. To get this certification, the student has to attend CNA classes and pass the written as well as the practical exam. Once the nursing aide gets the license, he / she should remember to renew it in every one or two years, or else the nursing assistant might not be allowed to cater to the patient's needs in any of the medical organizations.
