So What Exactly Is Conversational or Covert Hypnosis?

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 138

So what is this covert or conversational hypnosis then?

Covert or conversational hypnosis is a method to communicate directly with a person's unconscious mind without them realising what is happening. The term conversational hypnosis obviously points to the fact that it takes place within a normal everyday conversation and is the ability to subtly communicate with another person's unconscious mind without their noticing. You aim using this skill is to influence the person whilst they believe it was their idea in the first place.

Learning covert hypnosis is useful for sales people and anyone who wishes to influence others but it is even more useful to allow us to notice then these techniques are being done to us.

There is nothing mystical or underhand about these skills. Many excellent communicators use them unknowingly and would definitely not describe themselves as a hypnotist of any description.

The "hypnotist" (silly way of describing it really - perhaps communicator would be better), needs to gain rapport. (Rapport could be a separate article in itself). To do this they use physiological and linguistic techniques to reduce resistance in the subject.

The communicator will then use language patterns to guide the subject to their way of thinking.

An example might be the "negative" pattern. Right now I don't want you to think of a pink elephant with a green ra ra skirt on! What did you do? Clearly you had to think of the elephant before trying to clear it from your memory.

Another example could be the use of a presupposition. You could ask your kids "Do you want to go to bed before or after the football game?" Clearly you do not mind which of the two options are selected. The clever thing here is that for the question to make sense your child has to accept that they are going to bed. This is a really powerful technique.

How many language patterns can you see in the following passage?

So maybe you haven't noticed yet how powerful these language patterns can be. It is nice to know that we can subtly persuade others isn't it? Can you imagine walking into a shop and the assistant wants to offer you a discount for no obvious reason or people at a party are drawn to your charismatic personality. Language patterns are worth learning because they are powerful and make you a much better communicator in social and work situations. In fact a friend of mine once said "You can become confident using these techniques if you want to practice often" and you might become aware that your communication improves with the more practice you do.

You get the picture now am sure and in future articles we can look at how these patterns work.

Have fun playing with these and let me know how you get on.
