Virtual Assistants: How to Make The Most of Your Networking Meetings

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

In these days of social media, blogging and online engagement, it's easy to forget the 'real world' methods of marketing. Attending networking meetings can be one of the best ways to meet potential clients and, given the plethora of different groups, there is bound to be at least one meeting near you that will suit you and your virtual assistance business. So how can you make the most of your networking events?

Find the group that suits you

As a VA, you'll probably have a specific set of skills or prefer to work with a niche group of clients. Focusing your networking efforts can mean that you can more easily come into contact with the kind of people you're looking to work for. Look for groups that have a high proportion of people in your niche area of business.

Look at your return on investment

There are so many groups out there that it's important to narrow down your efforts to the kind of group that will be worth your while. There's no point flogging your business to the point of exhaustion at groups made up of people who can't afford to use your services, for example.

Make sure you give as well as get

It's really important to look upon networking as a long term investment in your business. If you go to groups and start giving people the hard sell, you'll just alienate potential customers and won't make many friends either! Look at it as an opportunity to connect with people: think of what you can do for others and you might find your good karma repays you tenfold.

Start your own group

Can't find a suitable networking group near you? Why not start your own? Think of the kind of business owners you'd like to attract and target your advertising and marketing of the group to them. If you want to work with mumpreneurs, for example, think about the sort of places where working mums congregate and leave posters and flyers there. You'll also want to make your meeting venue as child friendly as possible - somewhere that has a crèche or babysitting facilities would be perfect.

Remember, don't go to events thinking 'I must get clients'. It's a bit like dating - your desperation will show through and that can be very off putting. Look at networking as an opportunity to meet people, to talk about your business and possibly be of help to someone. You never know, you might even have fun!
