Should You Ditch the 3 Foot Rule?

March 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 129

If you are seriously considering signing up for an evening class simply because you are running short of names on your contacts' list.. STOP! I have nothing against evening classes per se, but constantly trying to pitch every new person you meet about your business opportunity is maybe not the best way to make friends, nor find prospects.

If your warm market has been giving you the cold shoulder and you're almost out of mates, perhaps it is time to admit that the old way just isn't working and look for a better way.

If your plan B is to start buying leads, I beg you to reconsider.

Whilst you might be chomping at the bit to pick up the phone and call 100 numbers to locate 5 real people who actually know why you're calling, I promise you that you can grow your business without that kind of rejection!

In the Go-Giver books, by Bob Burg & John David Mann, it was often mentioned that you cannot MAKE a sale where no sale is to be made.

Copy writer turned author, Eugene Schwartz said: "Anytime you sell anything, the demand has to exist before you even walk into the picture. No matter how great of a salesman you are, if the demand is not there, you are going to fail."

In other words, most of the sales process is about finding the right prospect.. one that actually WANTS what you have to offer.

All we're trying to do in business, particularly in sales is leverage the wants and needs people already have. By tapping into demand instead of trying to create it, you're going with the flow rather than trying to paddle upstream.

I have gained a lot of my skills and training online from marketers who gave away a lot of valuable stuff for free before they ever tried to sell me anything. They proved to me that they know what they were talking about before they recommended a useful book, course or a whole marketing system that might help me grow my business.

Attraction marketing is nothing new, but it has introduced huge advances in network marketing over the past decade or so. If you just never felt as though hotel meetings and cold calling were working for you.. perhaps blogging and social media are worth a try? Throw in some online marketing experience and knowhow and you might finally be earning the kind of money you need to give up your day job.

I heard a great quote recently that this industry is the easiest way to make a million dollars.. but the hardest to make an extra $1000. That really brings it home! There are few ways to become a millionaire that are simpler than network marketing. With a little research and training (both easy to find online) it is relatively easy to get yourself set up with a blog and start making affiliate commissions on other people's products, although tapping into the big traffic takes some expertise. But compared to bricks and mortar startups that require many thousands in capital investment and overheads, online 'real estate' (i.e. blogs and websites) and network marketing businesses are cheap as chips.

The internet is made for learning, sharing and networking. It multiplies your potential reach by a factor of thousands.. the number of people that you could attract to your website with good use of social media, Google, PPC and blogging is almost unfathomable if you can just learn the skills. Creating great content by sharing your knowledge and experience is a great place to start attracting people to you.

So should you ditch the three foot rule? My opinion is yes. Plenty of people will say there is still room for the old school networking approach. There is surely nothing wrong with talking to everyone and anyone within three feet of you, but I'm sure they could live without hearing about your opportunity, at least not the first time they meet you. Why not talk to them with the old fashioned intention of just making a new friend!?

Michelle Goddard is determined to share the wealth! Her blog is a place to find solace from old school network marketing techniques like picking up a big heavy telephone to call a bunch of irrate strangers who don't know you from Adam. Check it out, you might just like what you read!
