How to Turn People Down the Right Way

January 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

Do you always find it hard to turn people down, even if you really do not want to do what they're asking of you?

Learning how to turn people down is a key skill for a man to learn. However, there are lots of men who suffer from this problem. Men who end up saying yes to just about every request presented to them and as a result they end up getting stuck doing things that they really do not want to do.

Often, people who can't turn people down, think that by refusing these requests people will then see them as the bad guy.

But the problem is that if you can't say no to people then you're setting yourself up to be a doormat for the rest of your life. You see, people who are always available and never say no get taken for granted. You don't want to be that guy.

Well, don't worry, there are actual ways that you can say "no" to people without looking like a complete jerk.

Here are some pointers on how to turn people down while still retaining your manhood.

"I wish I could, but..."

Starting off with this phrase then following up with a reasonable excuse will get you off the hook with most requests quickly. You are basically saying that you really wish that you could be of more help but certain circumstances are preventing you from doing so.

Just tell the person that you cannot grant the favor because you are already preoccupied with something else, and promise to make it up to them next time.

Show them you really did consider the request

Always take the time to analyze each request before accepting or turning them down. If someone comes up to you asking for a favor tell the person that you will need a bit of time to think about it and you will give an answer later. Now even if you do decide to turn the offer down the requester will not feel as bad since you did take the time to think about the request rather than declining it immediately.

Use a counter-offer

Another way to politely turn someone down is to propose a counter-offer to the request. If it is impossible for you to give the favor, just suggest something else that you can do for the person. More often than not the person asking the favor will gladly accept the counter-offer.

Stand your ground

If the person who is asking for a favor is being a little too forceful, almost to the point that you are getting irritated, then you should just bluntly say no. There are bound to be some instances where it is impossible to decline the person politely, there are times that you need to be forceful as well.

It is often hard to say "no" to people who ask things of you, but you should also not say yes to each and every request. Learning how to turn people down won't just help you avoid getting stuck doing things that you absolutely abhor, it'll gain you the respect of your peers as well.

If you find that it makes you petrified at the thought of people not liking you because you've turned them down, you should probably do some deep, honest soul searching and ask yourself why other people's opinions of you means so much?

A man must know how to set his standards and limits. He should also know how to communicate them effectively to the people in his life. That is unless of course you enjoy living your life as a spineless doormat.
