Build a Bluebird Trail

July 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 195

Put up bluebird birdhouses in your community, spacing them placed every one-quarter mile apart. Start with 12 to 15 boxes. Mount the boxes anywhere between February 1 and July 1, however earlier is better.

Nesting can start as early as March. The nesting range of the eastern bluebird is from Newfoundland south to Florida and Bermuda, west to the Rocky Mountains, and from Saskatchewan south to Texas. The mountain bluebird ranges from Alaska to Manitoba, south to the mountains of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, and the Dakotas. The western bluebird resides from southern British Columbia and central Montana, south to northern Baja California.

Ensure that the bluebird houses are built to specification. The entrance hole should be 1.5 inches in diameter. The box should be 8 inches high. There should be 6 inches from the base of the entrance hole to the floor. The boxes should have ventilation and drainage holes, and a roof that overhangs the front by about 2 inches.

Paint the outside of the boxes only with a light color that reflects the sunlight. Choose a secondary road to mount the houses. A place where there are open fields next to woods. A place that already has fence posts up is desirable. Ask permission of landowners so that you do not trespass.

Mount the bluebird birdhouses no more than 4 feet above the ground. This will deter house sparrows. Do not put up boxes next to occupied houses, as house sparrows would likely be congregating there. Boxes can be attached to fence posts, small or medium sized trees (not large trees), and utility poles (as long as permission was obtained from the utility company.)

If you are doing this as part of a scout project then you may want to inspect the boxes once a week. Tap on the boxes to make the parent bird fly away. Then open up the box and take notes on how many eggs there are, if there is a nest, and the number of days between seeing eggs and seeing hatchlings.

Maintain the boxes. At the end of the season, remove the nest, and replace or repair any damaged birdhouses.
