Joss Stone: Voice of an Unknown Generation

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Easily one of the best voices of the last ten years, Joss Stone's gritty croon has carved a niche all its own in a new kind of blue-eyed soul. Drop-dead gorgeous and as English as they come, you still expect something closer to Leona Lewis to come from Stone's young vocal cords... instead you get what Smokey Robinson calls'Aretha Joplin'.

With 'LP1', Joss launches her own record company and takes on co-production with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, mining earthy, funky grooves to create the stellar 'Drive All Night', 'Cry Myself to Sleep' or the groove-rock of 'Somehow'. With a voice as good as Stone's, it's less about finding a hook, and more about letting Joss just tell the story, and off she goes. With 'Boat Yard', if it's not already raining outside, it surely may inside as Stone's groovalicious, rainy-day tale is as much about the plaintif grit of her voice as it is the story she tells.

Here's a real question though: After watching substandard Idols for the last few seasons, and hearing autotune on 90% of the major pop releases that come out today, is a voice as good as Joss Stone's going to be relegated to underground greatness? Not that there's anything necessarily 'wrong' with underground greatness... but why in the world would we have Britney Spears making a bigger splash than Joss Stone? At least Lady Gaga can truly sing, but Miley Cyrus? Come on now.

At least there is some hope, as we watch Adele make a huge, soulful impact on what's left of the music industry (and listeners at large). We've heard for generations now that pop music dumbs down the listener, perhaps to the point where they have no palette for good singers and songs, having been brought up with all the autotuned mediocrity dying record labels continue to push.

So if Adele and others can make waves with truly great vocals, perhaps there is hope for Stone to have a good long day in the sun. There are some voices that are just instantly arresting, and Joss Stone has to top that short list. If she can keep her independence and her soul intact, we can anticipate many more great works like 'LP1' to come down the line, and watch this artist create a strong, solid career over many decades a la Aretha, Bonnie Raitt and others who never compromised the soul at the heart of their work.
