How to Use Social Media To Discover Your Next Favorite Song

June 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

Discovering new music that you love is a wonderful feeling. With so much music out there, though, how do you find bands and songs that you like?

1. See what bands your Facebook friends have listed on their profile. If you have a friend whose musical taste you especially admire, be sure to check out what music he or she has listed. Facebook makes this process super easy since you just have to click on the band's name to be brought to their official Facebook band page.

2. Follow artists and bands that you already like on Twitter. Musicians love to help their fellow musician friends by tweeting about their projects. Use this spread-the-word phenomenon to your advantage. If a singer tweets a link to her friend's band's latest music video, take a minute and watch it!

3. Do you have a favorite venue to see concerts? Go to the venue's Facebook or website and look at the calendar. Investigate the music of any bands that sound interesting, and get a ticket or two to some shows while you're at it. Sometimes the opening band is even better than the headlining act, and you can discover great new music by arriving to a concert early and catching the opening bands.

4. Although most bands don't use MySpace anymore, they probably still have their MySpace profiles online. See who your favorite artists' Top 8 friends are, and listen to any bands that are listed. Their music will probably be similar to the band you already like, which is always a good foundation to begin your music discovery journey.

5. Bringing social media offline and into the real world, ask a friend for music recommendations. You could ask for a suggestion for one song they think you would like, or a whole album, or a band. Even better, ask five friends to make you a mixtape CD for your next birthday. Assuming your friends put 10 to 12 songs on their mixtape CDs, you get to listen to over 50 songs!

If you feel like you're in a music rut and want to find new music that you really connect with, be patient and use social media. Sometimes, it's a numbers game, and you have to listen to many songs before you find that gem that you love. Stay with it, and you'll be rewarded with beautiful new music. It's worth it!
