At Last Someone Is Listening! And Not Just to Mp3 Players...

May 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

In a recent survey by the charity Action on Hearing Loss, 4 out of 5 people didn't realise that loud music can cause tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or damage your hearing.

Or both.

Thanks goodness that from 2013, it will be EU law that all new mp3 players have to have a default setting of 85 decibels. But even so, it is predicted that a third of mp3 wearers will override this setting.

So are we back to Square One? Possibly. Perhaps it will help if we put it all into context.

For instance, what does 85 decibels actually mean? How loud IS 85dB?

Take a look at this comparison:

10dB - Normal breathing

20dB - Rustling leaves

30dB - Whisper

40dB - Refrigerator humming

60dB - Normal conversation

70dB - Vacuum cleaner (louder on a wooden floor!)

80dB - Average city traffic

90dB - Food blender

100dB - Pneumatic drill (jack hammer)

115dB - Loud music concert

140dB - Jet engine

Does that help?

I hope so. The vacuum cleaner come in surprisingly low in my opinion - although I would expect cleaning a wooden floor returns a reading higher than 70dB.

But what about the food blender? OVER the threshold! Does this mean that Jamie Oliver, James Martin and Rick Stein will be soon checking in for hearing tests?

(Perhaps we take a leaf out of Gok Wan's (cookery) book. I don't think I've seen him use a mechanical kitchen device - yet.)

Industrial hearing loss - what qualifies? And what do you do about it?

I suppose the last four on the scale above all fall into this category. Others that readily spring to mind might include printing works, bread factory, perhaps working outdoors in Oxford Street! In our Scunthorpe hearing centre, most of our custom used to come from the local steel factory- largely NHS referrals.

What to do about it is simple.

Visit your GP or a private hearing aid audiologist for a free hearing assessment. The advantage of a private consultation is that they will come out to you if you are too far away from a local branch - with no call out charge.

Such action can resolve matters if you do suspect your hearing has been damaged. But you can also prevent it in the first place by ensuring your company adheres to the correct health and safety procedures if you do work in a noisy environment. Your employer can advise on this.

And in your leisure time - turn the volume down on your music or wear sensible, good quality headphones.

Your GP can check your hearing. However, if you wish to address this immediately and free of charge, privately, call 0800 612 7992.

Quote appointment reference WB RH 02 and a registered hearing aid audiologist from Regional Hearing Services will able to fit you in for a free check at short notice - wherever you live in England & Wales.

There is also no call out charge for home visits.
