How to Play Keyboard Songs Without a Backing Group

March 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 174

As a beginner you will learn basic pieces of music that have a simple bass & melody line. What you may not know is that you can adapt any piece of music to suit your scenario, for example if you are wanting to perform you may need to bring your music more to life. This may mean adding more flair into your original beginner's piece of music.

This is easy enough to do if you know how. Many keyboard players love to go back and play their first pieces of music that they have learned on the keyboard. Once you get to a certain level you may start to think that you could add more to these songs but are unsure of how to.

What you need to be able to do is to look at your music and have a think about that places you can add more in.

A good place to start is to look at what is being played in your right hand and see if you can double up on the notes. For example if you are playing a melody line and one of the repetitive notes was a C, then take a look at the chords given and apply this to your melody. You may need to invert them so C is sounding as the strongest note, but what will happen is that is you do this on every other note throughout your melody or you do it in just the chorus. It will thicken the sound up and it will sound a lot fuller.

This is the technique you need to develop if you want to perform and be a solo keyboard player.

The other thing you need to look at developing is the bass section of your music. You may find that your beginner's music just has one bass note every four bars which is how simple music should be.

What you can do after playing for a short period is to look at your bass section and if the notes in the bass are held for four beats throughout in the intro and verses, double up the note so you play it two times per bar. Pick this up in the chorus so you are playing it 8 times as a quicker rhythm.

By doing this you will instantly make it sound more professional and it will be ready to perform to public.

Another great feature about a keyboard compared to a traditional piano is that you may have a rhythm option which will give you drums that can accompany your playing. By using this it will not only improve your timing but it will enhance your playing for when you have live performances.

By doing all these things it gives you the chance to perform without relying on other people as backing, and this way you can pocket all the money you make on gigging!
