February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

Every electric guitar has electronic components like pickups, pots, and switches that give the guitar its unique sound. Fender guitars' signature sound comes from their five-way switches and single coil pickups. Gibson Les Paul guitars' sound comes from their three way selectors, multiple tone knobs, and humbucker pickups. Not only do these electronics develop the tone of the guitar, they also give the guitar personality.

But what do you do when your guitar's electronics aren't working right? Have you had your guitar cut out on stage before? Have you ever had your guitar crackle when you turn the volume up or down? Chances are you have. Every guitarist has had these problems at one point and time. In this article I will show you how to repair your guitar electronics, so your guitar can sound great again.

Why does your guitar keep cutting out?

Usually guitars cut out because there is a break in the wiring somewhere. Guitars are wired so that all the pots, switches and pickups are all connected. If one of these connections is broken, the guitar will cut out. Luckily, this is a simple guitar repair to perform. First, you will need to remove the back cavity covers, so you can see the electronics. Second, plug your guitar into your amp, so you can hear when it cuts out. Now all you have to do is wiggle the guitar wires and listen for it to cut out. Once it cuts out, you will know where the break is.

Repairing a broken wire is an easy guitar repair. All you need is a soldering pencil and some solder. Heat the wire up with the soldering pencil and apply the solder to the joint. Once the solder hardens the wires should be held together firmly.

Why does your guitar crackle?

Crackling pots are an extremely common problem. It is also an extremely common guitar repair. Basically, pots require internal contact to work properly. If dirt gets stuck inside of the pots, it can disrupt the contact and the outgoing signal. This is the main reason why pots crackle. When you spin the knob, the dirt gets shuffled around inside of the pot and creates a crackling sound. Dirty pots are an easy guitar repair. Simply spray some DeoxIT inside of your guitar pots. It will clean the dirt off the contacts and allow the pot to work normally again.

That's all there is to it. Now you guitar's electronics work awesome. Now plug your axe back in and crank it up!
