Who Killed Off the UK Summer Events Season?

April 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

One thing is for sure if you want your UK Summer event to survive. Don't say the C word as Alex James found out to his demise last year with both Cameron Clarkson appearing at his festival. So as we submit Alex James presents Harvest Food Music Festival to the history books what lays ahead for the UK Summer events season?

2012 is proving to be a tough year for festival organizers with quite a few of the big events deciding to take a gap year and letting the Queen and Olympics take centre stage. I mean trying to compete against the barrage of new festivals trying to cash-in on the scene is one thing but trying to compete against the Queen and the Olympics all in the same summertime. I think you really have to throw your balls to the wall if you think you are going to come out on top of that scrap.

With a lot of the Olympic and Diamond Jubilee events offering either very cheap tickets or free admission suddenly over-priced festival tickets have become very unappealing.

What other issues are impacting UK Summer events in 2012? Well, have we all just had enough of it for now? This seems to be a very common topic being discussed lately. Another common discussion is that people can't really distinguish one festival from another in recent years. For example last year one artist who will remain nameless appeared at 16 festivals across the UK. I almost thought about taking out an injunction against him, it was like I was being stalked by a celebrity. In recent years there seems to have been an upsurge in acts trying to promote their image using festivals as the tool to achieve this goal. I mean 10 years ago would you have seen a rapper even walk through the gates of an English music festival in the middle of nowhere? Not on your Nelly!

I think the saturation of festivals in recent years has really started to hurt the industry. Organizers trying to compete with each other to get headline acts that perhaps festival goer's are really not that interested in. But shouldn't festivals be sticking to their roots? The roots that made them popular in the first place and forget about providing a sound board for 10 a penny rappers or should that be 10 cent rappers?

The first of the big event organizers to think along these lines are the Big Chill founders who have now created the Nova festival which is moving away from focusing on the big center staged acts and putting the emphasis back on unique music arts theatrical events and good food. Lets hope more follow suit shortly

Whatever your plans are for 2012 a good website listing the majority of festivals community cultural events across the UK is which also enables users to easily create their own clubs events and activities.
