The First 3 Steps To Becoming A Successful Songwriter

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 227

As a songwriter, you are writing songs for other recording artists to perform. Your work can transform unknown recording artists into superstars. You will be popular in the music industry if you develop a reputation for being a great songwriter.

Preparation Is Key!

You need to equip yourself with the right resources and methods if you are going to be a successful songwriter.

You cannot become successful without songwriting talent. Nothing else matters if the songs you are attempting to sell are horrible.

You Are Selling To The Salesman

You are not selling your music to the consumer. You are selling your music to recording artists. These artists will attempt to sell your songs to their consumers.

Your Results Will Make Your Reputation

Recording artists, managers, music executives, music producers, and music publishers will ultimately determine your success as a songwriter. If your songs provide great results, recording artists will become loyal clients.

You cannot attempt to sell your songs if you do not create them first. The three steps needed to start your career as a songwriter are:

You should not attempt to write for every single music genre.

If you write for everything, you are usually good at nothing. You need to figure out the music genre that you want to focus your songwriting talents on and concentrate on improving your craft in that music genre.

It Is All About Priorities!

You should never attempt to write for more than three music genres. You are should focus writing songs for one music genre, since you are beginning your career as a songwriter.

As a songwriter, you will write songs about many topics. Your creativity and clients will determine the type of songs that you will create, but you should have an area of concentration.

What Is An Area Of Concentration?

An area of concentration is something that you will attempt to be the best at. When your clients need a topic from a songwriter in a specific music genre, they will come to you first, since it is your area of concentration.

For Example

You are a songwriter, and your favorite music genre is R&B music. You write many different types of songs, but you have a reputation for creating the best nightlife songs. It is your area of concentration.

People come to you for many types of songs, but most of your songwriting income comes from writing songs about the nightlife due to your reputation.

You must create a finished product of your songs. It is not good enough to write the greatest songs anymore. People want to hear a demonstration of the finished product. People will love or hate your music when they hear someone singing the lyrics to your song.

You must have two things to create a quality demo of your songs.

Demo Necessity Part 1: Studio Time

You need a recording studio to record your songs. It does not matter if you use a home studio or a high priced recording studio. You need a quality version of your demo, so people can hear your music clearly.

Demo Necessity Part 2: A Performer

If you are not a good singer, you must hire a good singer to perform your songs.

Presentation Is Everything

You must hire the best possible singer to perform your songs. If you do not hire the right singer, nobody will like your songs, since you will create a horrible demo.

If the demonstration of your music is horrible, your songs are horrible, and people will not pay to use them. If you consistently write good songs and create good demos, you will be respected in the music industry as a great songwriter.
