The Digital Dj Revolution Is Upon Us!

June 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 206

If you are new DJ or just preparing to invest a substantial amount of money into DJ equipment, you maybe wondering if you should ante up the substantial cash it takes to invest in a pair of CD players or Technics turntables, or go the route that so many are taking right now and invest in a good digital setup, which can be substantially less expensive. If you choose to go the digital route and forego learning to play on the "traditional" platforms, you may then find yourself asking if you can really call yourself a "real" DJ. While I am amongst many who believe that the best DJs learn to play from all platforms, I strongly believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with going the digital route exclusively, ie. Laptop with or without a controller.

There are however many who feel differently. But let's face it, the sheer amount of vitriol against DJs who play from their laptops exclusively is really a signal that there is something powerfully threatening about the new wave of digital DJing. The fact is, the revulsion that some have to seeing new DJs playing from laptops and controllers is really about the fear that someone with much less training, experience and expertise now has the ability to compete with us DJs who have years of experience. Technological advances have leveled the playing field and we feel like we have lost our exclusivity, and many of us feel that this will result in a decreased demand for our services.

However, I would like to remind you all, that the industry had the same discussion in the late 90's when cd players, like the Pioneer's CDJs were transforming the industry from vinyl-based to one that included digital formats. At that time, because it was most convenient for me financially, I myself had learned to play from cd players. Now if you really look at it, the move towards CD media back then was all about convenience and efficiency and it was no different then than it is today. After-all, CD players like the Pioneer CDJs are nothing less than specialized computers equipped with CPUs and programmable memories that allows us DJs to do our Jobs more efficiently. Because of this, the industry quickly got over its resistance to the "cd revolution" and embraced it's benefits.

In any industry with strong entrenched traditions, such as the DJ industry, there is always going to be substantial resistance to change. In addition, a skill-based, performance industry like the DJ industry, will always have those who question the validity of technological advances that make it easier for new people to enter and compete. So after learning to play from CDs, I spent the next few years buying and learning to play from vinyl, in order to be seen unquestionably as a "real" DJ. But what cannot be questioned, then or now, is the fact that advances in technology that enable a person to perform his or her duties more efficiently and effectively eventually win out and often eventually become accepted as industry standards.

Digital DJing is the wave of the future and has introduced waves of new performance possibilities for traditionally experienced DJs and the newbies alike. Controllers like the Traktor's S4 offer performance features not usually available on CD decks, let alone turntables. Furthermore, because tracks can be located, cued up and ready to play in a matter of seconds, DJs have more time during their sets for spontaneity and creativity, which in my opinion is a truly worthy benefit.

Like it or not, the digital revolution is afoot! Are you down?
