Tips on Moving House With A Baby

February 21, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 179

It's not ideal to move house with a baby but some people will have little or no choice in the matter. The thought of moving house with a baby may be somewhat daunting, but with some thought and careful planning it is entirely possible. If you are moving house and have a baby to look after, follow these tips to help see you through the process.

Look After Yourself

Without looking after yourself and giving yourself the time to deal with the emotions and stress involved in both moving and looking after your baby you will have nothing left of yourself to dedicate to either task. You may need to call upon your support network more than you usually would in the lead up to moving house - not just so that will have more time to pack and prepare, but also so that you will have time to unwind and look after yourself properly. Be honest and open with people about how you are feeling and seek medical advice if it all becomes too overwhelming.

Prepare a Schedule

There are two schedules that you will need to stick to when moving with a baby:

  1. You should attempt to stick as closely to your baby's regular routine as possible. Keeping them to schedule will reduce the impact your move will have on them and it will also help to maintain their sleeping patterns. By maintaining your baby's sleeping patterns you can plan on getting other work done whilst they are sleeping.
  2. You will need to make a thorough plan and schedule for your move. Being prepared with a schedule for your move will help to keep the process on track. Careful planning can also reduce the chance that you will be overwhelmed with a last minute rush on moving day.

Safety is Paramount

Your home is likely to be in a state of disarray in the lead up to moving house. It is important that you minimize any potential threats to your baby's safety. In preparation for your move you are likely to use scissors, plastic bags, box cutters, cleaning products and other dangerous chemicals. Each of these items are a potential hazard to your baby and to any other children that may be present. Constant vigilance is required when moving house to ensure that your baby is kept safe from dangerous objects and chemicals.

On Moving Day

If at all possible, it is best not to have your baby present on moving day. It is going to be difficult for you to keep an eye on them. There is going to be a lot of noise and maintaining their schedule is going to be difficult. If your child is mobile then open doors will present additional safety concerns.

If you have no choice but to keep your baby at home on moving day then someone should be made responsible for them at all times. It may be beneficial to place your baby in an empty room in order to reduce the amount of noise and disturbance that they will be subjected to be your movers.

Keeping familiar items around throughout the moving process can help your baby to stay relaxed despite the constant noise, disruption and change. Items like their favorite toy, blanket, or pillow can make your baby feel more secure and should be packed last.
