The Importance of USDOT Numbers

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 192

When you are getting ready to move, there are a number of different things you need to be aware of when searching for a moving company to hire. One of the most important things to look for when you are comparing different movers is their US Department of Transportation number, or the USDOT number for short. This is one of the many requirements that moving companies must fulfill in order to operate, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The number allows the government to monitor the mover and collect important information on how the company operates.

When a moving company applies for a USDOT number, they will automatically enter a program called the "New Entrant Safety Assurance Program" which is an education program that aims to teach the mover and its employees everything they need to know about moving safety, hazardous material regulations and other occupational hazards. If the company maintains a safe record during an 18-month probationary period by following all the regulations required of them, they will then receive a number from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Although USDOT numbers are not mandatory for every moving company, any long-distance mover that operates in multiple states and performs moves that cross state lines must be in possession of one.

Because of this, it's important that you make sure any moving company you hire for a long-distance move have a number, even if you are not performing an interstate move. There are several ways in which you can check to see if your mover has a USDOT number. Going to safer.fmcsa.dot.gov will bring you to the FMCSA SAFER system, where you can check your company's number. Also, if the company has a number, it would be printed on the side of the vehicles in the mover's fleet, usually on the doors of the cab.

If you are hiring company that specializes in long-distance and interstate moves, they should have a registered USDOT number not only in the state that they are based in, but also in every other state that they typically operate in. This means that if you are moving to another state, you must make sure that the company has a separate number for your home state, the state you are moving to, and any other states that you must travel through to get to your destination.

USDOT numbers are important because they signify that the moving company is in compliance with all FMCSA safety regulations, and they let you know that you have placed your move in the hands of a reliable and trustworthy mover.
