Making Aliyah: Your Ticket to the Promised Land

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 167

If you are considering moving to Israel, you could not have picked a better time. Everyone knows Israel is one of the most progressive places in the world. This "Holy Land" has so many things to offer both travelers and people who want to raise their families. Other than majestic and historic structures, you can also witness the beautiful culture of this country. This is one reason many people of Jewish faith are aspiring to move and live here. So if you want a brand new life, Israel is a perfect choice.

Things you need to know before moving to Israel

One of the things you need to know when moving to Israel is "Aliyah." It is the term used for the immigration of Jews to Israel. In Hebrew, this means "going up" or "to ascend". Making Aliyah is a basic principle in Zionism and an important Jewish cultural concept. Aliyah is under Israel's Law of Return, which states that any Jew and eligible non-Jews (a child, grandchild of a Jew, the spouse of a Jew, the spouse of a child of a Jew, and the spouse of a grandchild of a Jew), have a legal right to assert Israeli citizenship. This law also states the legal rights for assisted immigration and settlement in Israel.

A male making Aliyah is called "Oleh" while "Olah" is for females. "Olim" is the collective name for them. Many Jews believe Aliyah is the only way to come back to their "Promised Land." They also see it as a recognition and acceptance of the promise to the descendants of Isaac, Jacob and Abraham-the most popular Hebrew patriarchs.

Making Aliyah is a complicated process. It requires many things. Just like moving to other countries, you need to adapt to the new environment. You need to learn the history, language, and culture.

When is the best time to make Aliyah?

The short answer for this is whenever you're ready. As mentioned above, the process is quite complicated and requires adjustments. You can be an Oleh at any age, but the younger, the better. If you have kids, it's better to start early. Younger people can easily adapt to these changes. For example, a 20-year-old can learn Hebrew faster than someone older.

It is also advisable to be familiar with the place. Plan a short trip first. Take time to review the history of the country. Visit historical landmarks and museums. You can witness and absorb the beauty and richness of the place during the trip. There are also local markets and modern shopping centers. Socialize with the people around you. You can also look for a place where you can reflect. Think about the things you may lose and you may gain.

Making Aliyah is one of the biggest decisions you need to make, but if you feel like there is a sense of connection between you, the people, and the homeland itself, perhaps it is the best time for a big change.
