Can You Move Yourself?

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

If you are considering a move some time in the near future, you might be wondering whether you should try to move all of your belongings yourself or shell out the money to hire professional movers to move your household for you. There is no one single answer to this question because there are many factors, including money, time and complexity that go into making this decision. This decision is going to be different for everyone.

To begin to determine what is right for you, it is necessary to ask yourself a few questions. Your answers will provide you with the answer to your question.

1. To get a ballpark figure as to how much it is going to cost to move your belongings, you should use the guide that most moving companies use to calculate an estimate. For instance a 26-foot truck will move four or more bedrooms, a 24-foot truck will move between three and four bedrooms, a 17-foot truck will move between two and three bedrooms, a 14-foot truck will move between one and two bedrooms and a 10-foot truck will move a one bedroom house or apartment.

2. You will also need to know the distance you will be moving. You should be able to get quotes on how much it costs to rent a truck to get you from your old house to your new one. If you only need the truck one-way, you will pay more, so be sure to mention that fact if it applies to you.

3. It is also important to factor in how much you would pay for gas and mileage if you choose to move yourself. You should add these costs onto the rental fee. Keep in mind that some rental companies include mileage in their fee.

After you answer these three questions, you will be able to contact several moving companies and compare their prices with your estimate. It is likely that some companies will need to see your old house before they can give you a quote. It is up to you if you want to do this; however, you can get instant online quotes from certain websites. Then, it is just a matter of comparing the two costs with each other to make your decision. Keep in mind that even though moving yourself might be cheaper on paper, you have to think about the physical toll it is going to take on you. This should be an important consideration in your decision.
