10 Moving Tips That Are Often Overlooked

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

In life, it is often the case that the smallest of mistakes result in the most dire of consequences. This is very often the case when it comes to moving house. All too often people are undone by the smallest of mistakes, resulting in their move turning into a nightmare.

Following are ten tips for moving house that are often overlooked, each of which can result in damage to your belongings, property, or may pose a risk to the health and safety of people involved.

  1. Remove light bulbs from lamps before transport and pack them separately. They are prone to breakage whilst in transit, resulting in further damage to your consignment and may cause injury to you or your movers.
  2. People often make the mistake of believing that they will save space in the moving van by transporting items inside drawers and wardrobes. This can lead to injury to your movers, and irreparable damage to the items themselves along with other pieces of furniture in your load.
  3. Fill voids in fragile items, such as crockery and glassware, with rolled up paper or cloth to minimize the likelihood of crushing. Smaller items may also find their way into such voids, rattling around in transit and causing damage. Any broken glass or ceramics resulting from such breakages can lead to injury to you or your movers.
  4. Keep a First Aid Kit on hand throughout the course of your move. Moving house is a dangerous process and you may need quick access to medical supplies. Never pack important medical supplies in boxes for transport by your moving company. You never know when you may need them.
  5. Secure adequate parking spaces for your movers in advance of their arrival. Don't forget that they may require enough room to open their rear doors. If your moving company cannot gain quick and easy access to your property it may end up costing you more.
  6. Change your locks as soon as you move into your new property (or request that the landlord do so). You can never be sure who has had access to your keys previously, or know their character..
  7. To prevent disastrous leaks, turn off you refrigerator and freezer a day or two in advance of your move and ensure that you have cleaned them thoroughly before they are to be loaded onto the truck.
  8. Wrap all sharp objects thoroughly to prevent injury and to limit their ability to damage other items in your load.
  9. Remove the rotating plate from inside your microwave oven. This is often forgotten and can cause irreparable damage to the appliance.
  10. Secure the doors and drawers of all furniture and appliances. This will make them easier to carry and will reduce the likelihood of damage to the items themselves, your other belongings and the properties you are moving from and to.
