Bloody Murder (2000)

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

Bloody Murder is a 2000 slasher film. The stars include Jessica Morris as Julie, Michael Stone as Dean, Traci Pacheco as Whitney, Christelle Ford as Drew, and Peter Guillemette as Patrick. The writer is John R. Stevenson. The director is Ralph S. Portillo.

Some teenage friends arrive at Camp Placid Pines where they are to be camp counselors. Their boss, Patrick, immediately send them to work preparing the camp for the summer. That night, they decide to play a game of "Bloody Murder" where one person is "It" and everyone else attempts to find "It". Upon finding it, a person must shout "Bloody Murder" and run back to base before "It" tags them. After the game, Jason, one of the teenage friends, turns up missing after being confronted by a dark figure. The next night Whitney disappears. Henry the groundskeeper warns them of peril in the surrounding woods.

In this film, we can see two classic horror franchises meeting up, indirectly. The first one is fairly obvious: Friday the 13th. A figure wearing a hockey mask going around killing people in a camp brings to mind the legendary Jason Voorhees. The second one isn't so obvious: Scream. The "whodunit" factor is extremely rare in horror movies, but this series is the most notable of franchises to employ it. In Bloody Murder, the true identity of the killer is a mystery throughout most of the film, much like the Scream movies.

Many people have been extremely critical of Bloody Murder because of its obvious inspiration which is mentioned earlier, Friday the 13th. It has been dubbed a ripoff of that series. But, in a larger sense, this isn't fair to say. Reimagining the ideas of previous horror movies is a practice that is well-known. While it's usually not this literal, it happens all the time. For instance, in the first Halloween films as well as Freddy vs. Jason, the main protagonist's name is Laurie/Lori. If one is gonna cry "foul" (or "Bloody Murder" as would seem more appropriate here) every time some of a horror movie's ideas are carried over into another unrelated film, then do it every time and not just when it's crystal clear like in this case.

To wrap, Bloody Murder is a great slasher film that applies many elements of its predecessors in the genre.
