Useful Tips for New Mountain Bikers

February 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 139

Mountain biking is an adventure sport that takes a lot of practice and patience to master. However, given the fun and pleasure you derive, it's all worth it.

This article lists few basic yet useful tips for everyone who wants to ride a mountain bike.

Selection of bike

A mountain bike is quite different from your everyday road biking. It requires sturdy and strong bikes along with a great balance. They should also be lightweight so that they can be handled and manoeuvred easily. Also, they should have good suspension to allow a smooth ride along the hilly and rough pathway. A bike with great suspension will also help you land safely after a jump. You should also pay attention to selecting the bike with a convenient mechanism for shifting bike gear.

Grip it very well

You need to grip your bike with just enough rigidity to ensure that your bike remains in control. Unlike most beginners who begin with a very strong grip on the handle, you should realize that it might lock your wrists and prevent a flexible motion. If your wrists and elbows are locked, they will bear the shocks your bike gets on a rough road.

Posture while riding

Your posture while you ride is really crucial in order to maintain the correct balance. You should be almost standing while leaning forward onto the handles. Your legs must be bent so that they can absorb the shocks in a spring-like fashion. On the other hand, if you lock your feet your joints may get affected by the shocks they will have to bear. Also, you should wear bike padded shorts and mountain bike helmets so that they do not restrict the movement of your body.

Practice gear shifting very well

The mountain bike gears are your best tool to ensure a comfortable ride. Your bike will either have rotating handles for shifting bike gear or will have the trigger shift gears. In either case, you should have practiced gear shifting before you embark on any serious ride. If you become proficient in changing these gear, it will greatly enhance your performance. Also, it will allow you to focus on the more important aspects of riding a bike along the trails.

Wear mountain bike gear for protection

Your safety should be your first concern. You should protect yourself with the this bike gear, such as biking helmets, mountain bike padded shorts, gloves, goggles, knee guards etc. You should be careful while selecting your bike helmets since they are really useful when you meet an accident.
