The Best Brands of Mountain Bikes

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 201

Mountain bikes are built with the ability to handle rough terrain in mind. They have specially constructed frames and tires to enable them to do this. Mountain bikes come in two flavors: hardtail, meaning without a rear suspension, and full suspension, which involves both rear and front suspension mounted to the bike's frame.

The type of mountain bike an individual chooses depends greatly on the kind of riding they want to do. Beyond that there are different brands of mountain bikes, and steep price differences.

The most popular companies and brands ranked highest are the following:

Schwinn

Their mountain bikes are considered to be sturdy and reliable. Seasoned mountain bikers like the aluminum frames and the ability to accelerate, which is one the things Schwinn bikes, like the Men's Frontier Elite, are known for. Schwinn is also an established American company, with a widely-recognized name, and many bike-shoppers may want to take this into account. Schwinn bikes also offer a great deal of adaptability when it comes to terrain, for example, their Women's Frontier Elite offers a 21 speed drivetrain.

Cannondale

Cannondale Bikes offer a line of 11 mountain bikes ranging from their "super bike", the Claymore, to the 29'er, which is considered perfect for beginners. Riders also have a choice between the full suspension RZ One-Twenty, which is built for long rides on mountain trails, and the hardtail Flash Alloy, which is an affordable stripped-down bike for serious bikers.

Diamondback

Aside from being able to choose between full suspension and hardtail, riders can also choose from among the different frames that diamondback offers for their line of mountain bikes. There are aluminum frames, of course, and also carbon fiber and steel. The diamondback line includes their All Mountain, which comes with a choice of full suspension or hardtail. These bikes are built to handle steep ascents and equally steep descents. Their Mission line of bikes are built from weapons-grade aluminum and feature a knuckle box, which changes the bike's center of gravity allowing for better cornering.

Mongoose

The Salvo group of Mongoose Bikes features an aluminum frame and full suspension with a 27 speed drivetrain (on the Comp) and hydraulic disc brakes. Bikes in the line include the deluxe Salvo Comp, along with the Salvo Elite and the Salvo Sport. The Sport Features a 30 speed drivetrain, while the Sport has 24 speeds. On the lower end of their offerings they have the stripped down hardtail Switchback line, which has aluminum frames and 24-speed drivetrains.

Trek

The Trek bike company has a whopping 89 different models of mountain bike from which shoppers may choose. These include the aluminum-framed hardtail Skye made for female riders, and which has a seven speed drivetrain. It is considered to be sturdy along with possessing all the basic features that a beginning rider needs. There is also the steel-framed 820, which also has seven speeds and which is a hardtail. The upper end of their line has the 10-speed Remedy 9.9, which has a full suspension mounted to its carbon alloy frame. It is light, durable, and considered to be one of the more technologically advanced mountain bikes available.

Newcomers to the sport will want to take cost into account and have a budget ready prior to purchasing their first mountain bike. They will also want to consider their own level of skills when it comes to handling their new bike.
