Importance of a Right Fitting BMX Helmet

March 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

You have made a wonderful decision of wearing a helmet every time you go out cycling. Now, the next step is to fit it properly in order to really enjoy the intended safety benefits.

Most of the modern BMX helmets are much advanced in design as compared to their 70's and 80's counterparts. They are lightweight, aerodynamic, and safer. A standard modern BMX helmet is made of polystyrene foam. Many BMX helmets also include carbon netting within the inner foam lining that helps in keeping the helmet in one piece even in the event of an impact. The outer shell of the helmet is generally made of thin plastic. In addition to preventing breakage during an impact, the plastic shell allows the helmet to slide when hitting a surface and prevent probable neck injuries.

When buying a new helmet, it is best to try and check its fitting before finalizing one. If you are ordering for helmets online, it is a good idea to stop at a nearby bike shop and test few similar models (probably of the same brand). Different brands such as Bell, Giro, Troy Lee, SixSixOne, etc manufacture several types of BMX helmets, each shaped differently. It is best to choose a helmet that offers a snug fit without being uncomfortable. If the helmet feels uncomfortable when you first put it on, it can cause more distraction while you are riding a bike.

Do not judge a helmet by its price. An expensive helmet may not be safer than an inexpensive one. In order to get guaranteed safety, all helmets in the market are required to pass certain safety standards. Make sure that the helmet you are purchasing has passed at least one or more of such safety certifications.

The difference in the price of these helmets is usually due to the research and development involved in designing and making of the helmet. A lightweight helmet with several air vents also need to pass through same safety test as a heavier helmet with lesser air vents. Therefore, it is natural that a manufacturer has to put in some extra research efforts in developing a lightweight helmet with similar safety features like a heavier helmet.

The goal of a well fitting helmet is to rest comfortably on your head in a level position. It is not meant to expose your forehead or sit on the back of your head. In order to place it properly, tilt it forward until it comes at level to your forehead but not covering your eyes. Now, adjust the strap to give a snug fit. A loose fitting helmet is almost like not wearing one at all!
