How to Prepare Yourself For Cycling Long Distances

January 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

One of the main attractions to many people when it comes to riding a bicycle is covering long distances, getting away from it all and enjoying the feeling of freedom that this gives you. As appealing as this is to most of us it is not practical to just get on a bike and ride long distances as there are things that you have to take into consideration to ensure that you are properly prepared for the exertion that you will endure during your long distance bike ride. So what should you do to ensure that you are properly prepared to ride your bike for long distances?

The first thing that you need to do is ensure that you have the proper clothing for your bike ride and even for the training that you will need to do to make sure that you are fit enough. Most people that have never ridden a bike for any great distance before do not understand the benefit of wearing the correct cycling clothing when riding your bike. This clothing is specifically designed to be close fitting to ensure maximum comfort which makes it easier to cycle for longer distances.

After clothing you should ensure that your bike is in a good condition so that it is suitable to ride a long distance. The main things to check are the wheels, brakes, chain and the tyres. You should check that your wheels are true and are showing no obvious signs of damage or rust to the rim or to any of the spokes. If you do spot any damage you should take the wheels to your local bike shop to get their opinion on whether or not they are safe to ride.

The brake blocks on your bike should be in good condition and be in full contact with the rim of the wheel when the brake lever is pulled. Check the cables that come from the brake levers as well just to check there are no signs of fraying or rust. If all of these checks are done and you are happy you should move on to checking the chain on your bike.

Most importantly your chain should be free from any rust and each link should move freely. You should check each link individually as just one link that is not free can cause damage to your gears and in the worst case the chain could snap leaving you stranded.

Finally you should move on to checking your tyres on your bike. The choice of tyres that you fit to your bike depends on the kind of riding that you are doing as well as the kind of bike that you are riding. If you are riding a road bike you should fit road specific tyres which should be between 20-25mm in width whereas if you are riding a mountain bike you need to rider mountain bike tyres which are usually 38mm or more in width. One of the most versatile tyres to fit to your mountain bike is the Maxxis Ignitor. The Maxxis Ignitor is suitable for road riding as well as riding off road on a rail or over rocky paths. Because of the Maxxis Ignitors high outer ridges but shallower inner tread this tyre really is a great all round performer if you are riding any distance.

When you are happy that you have the correct clothing and that your bike is ready for a long ride the on road the only thing you should consider is whether or not you are fit enough to tackle a long bike ride. If you are happy with all these checks then you should get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
