250cc Motorcycles: Fun, Easy and Efficient

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 221

Summertime is coming for North America and it is a good season for motorcyclists for a number of reasons. It is easier to drive a motor cycle in warm weather when there isn't any risk of snow and no need to bundle up with multiple layers of clothing.

Summer motorcycle driving also can give you a chance to save some money on fuel costs. The price of gas often rises in the summer due in part to the increased number of miles driven by the average motorist. You can offset the increased fuel cost by driving a more efficient vehicle for your general commuting if you have a motorcycle to use.

One of the most efficient types of bikes on the market are the 250cc class of motorcycles. While they are not the fastest or most impressive they do get you from place to place and they can do it while returning over 70 MPG.

One of the most popular 250cc motorcycles for many years has been the Kawasaki Ninja 250. The Ninja 250 was introduced by Kawasaki back in 1983 and has been popular since then with relatively few changes over the years.

Even though it is only a 250cc model the Ninja can cover the quarter mile in about fifteen and a half seconds at a speed of nearly 82 MPH. The most modern Ninja is the fourth generation model introduced in the 2008 model year.

While the Ninja 250 is a sportbike style ride the Honda Rebel 250 appeals to a different niche. It is built in the cruiser style and is meant for more relaxed riding on highways and country byways. You can get a range of about 190 miles with a Rebel 250 since it regularly achieves around 60 MPG.

Another route you can go if you want a 250cc motorcycle that can be used on or off road is to pick one of the many dual sport bikes that are good for trail riding and commuting. Yamaha makes two 250cc models like this. One is a more modern liquid cooled model while the other is a traditional air-cooled old school style dual sport bike. Kawasaki also makes the KLR250 for those looking for a small dual sport bike to zip around on.

If you already have motorcycle experience probably the only reasons you would want to buy a bike this small is to get better fuel economy but if you are a small rider or a beginner 250cc motorcycles can make good learning bikes and you can usually get one for a good price. To really save on both the purchase price and fuel costs you can get a nice used 250cc model for one thousand to fifteen hundred dollars.

Before you buy a bike remember to check out the licensing requirements in your state so you can get started driving right away. It's also a good idea to pick up some safety gear like a helmet and riding jacket at the same time you pick up your motorcycle.
