How Much Do You Really Want It? (Lessons From Shark Tank)

April 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 138

One of my favorite TV shows is Shark Tank on ABC.

Entrepreneurs come and pitch their businesses to the panel of "sharks" (Investors) and they decide if they want to invest and negotiate a deal.

On a recent show there was a woman who came to pitch her product, which was a cake mix she created for dogs.

Her sales for the four years of her business were low and she talked about her inability to afford doing Trade shows and other high visibility marketing methods.

Lori Greiner, from QVC, began to explore other options and asked her if she had attempted to go to pet stores and just do walk ins or cold calls.

Her response was that sales was not her strong point.

One of the Sharks, Mark Cuban, Owner of the Mavericks, always seems to say something that hits home. You can tell that he believes in the PROCESS that we go through in life when we truly want to achieve something.

When explaining to the woman why he wasn't willing to invest in her company he says this:

"You haven't felt like your back was against the wall enough to break through your personal barriers. You told us that you're not a sales person. That tells me that you're not COMMITTED enough to the success of your product to TRY ANYTHING. I can't see writing a check for somebody who finds the EXCUSE rather than finds the OPPORTUNITY."

The fact that she allowed her weakness to be an excuse instead of working around it to find a solution cost her a potential $50,000 investment into her business.

She admitted during her exit interview:

"Today I think the sharks saw my biggest weakness, which is that I allow excuses to get in the way of making my product successful."

She was able to take in the feedback and took responsibility for her personal shortcomings.

I think that going forward she will likely take this as a reality check and push forward to overcome the excuses and weaknesses that have been holding her back.

It's easy to hide behind our excuses, but if we are fortunate enough something or someone will come into our lives to cause us to face the truth so that we can GROW and get closer to our goals.

What personal barrier have you not been willing to break through in order to get to your goals?

What idea have you NOT been willing to try simply because the effort required falls outside of your comfort zone?

If that were you standing in front of the panel, what questions do you know someone could ask you that you would have an EXCUSE as an answer?

Ask yourself the hard questions so that you can make adjustments now. Then when an opportunity finally presents itself you will be prepared and not miss out on your reward!

Take some time to reflect on those questions, write out your response, and challenge yourself!
