7 Practices to Help You Break Out of That Procrastination Pattern

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 97

Am I Lazy or Crazy?

Procrastination isn't about laziness or craziness, it's about fear, overwhelm, and perfectionism, and guess what? We all experience it, and I'm sure you can relate. So here are some great ways to get you unstuck. I practice them and believe me, they work.

One of the first things I share with my clients is, "We are all doing the best we can, given what we know and what we have experienced so far in our lives." That's why you want to continue learning about yourself throughout your life, because, what got you here, wont get you where you want to be.

Now that that's understood, here are 7 practices to help you break out of that Procrastination pattern.

1. Take action! The smallest action will very often break that cycle by creating renewed energy. When we stand up to our fears, and take charge in even the smallest way, it is powerful. It changes the present into a positive.

2. Be prepared. Invest in a journal that fits easily in your purse, and keep a pen attached to it so that you can capture the great idea or solution every time it comes you. Then, when you do create that block of time, the first step is already in front of you- and where you can find it. Not on some misplaced scape piece of paper.

3. Optimize your time. Take advantage of all the small moments when you can focus on your idea, like while waiting for an appointment, or for the kids when you're the designated car pooler. One of my favorites is while soaking in the tub! This is a great time to review what you have already written, and it helps imprint your ideas, too. We all have many small moments that add up to a big chunk.

4. Set a Goal and stick to it. If you keep waiting for it to feel like the right time-you are missing out on The Right Time. Without goals, our intentions never manifest. They are nothing more than thoughts that leave us feeling guilty because we ignore them, and now is the time to begin.

5. Commit out loud to a trusted friend. Tell your friend something like, "I am going to spend the next 30 minutes writing about my passions and what makes me happy." Then do it. Right then.

6. Begin with the 4 W's to get specific. Along with setting a goal, it's important to get specific about what, why, where, and when. Then you can focus on the How. Procrastination sets in when we are fearful, and if we begin with the How, we get stuck with all the reasons how it wont work. The 4 W's are dream clarifiers so go for it! Dream!

7. Believe that you will achieve your goal. Intention sets you in motion, and Belief provides the momentum to keep it going. When you let doubt into your plan, your whole plan collapses. Believing in your self is crucial to actualizing your dream.

And now, I am going to go play with my horses with a much clearer conscious because I feel good about manifesting my intention to write my article. And the truth is, the horses and I will have a much better connection because my intention is clear and focused on being with them.
