A Meditation on Time and Eternity

May 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 99

I was sitting here on a day where the children were out enjoying the new snow. It was the rare and first time the house was so quiet that I could hear the clock ticking.

Looking up from my chair, I pondered the noise. I looked at the clock as the minute hand sounded its way around the hour.

In a flash I realized how long we find time passing sometimes. Like a long check out line, or in a long traffic line up. How slow time passes when we are young and long for our life to start. How we can't wait to have another birthday to reach that magic age that will somehow make things right?

It was then I took a closer look at the minute hand and realized with each tick, there was a second I would never see again. A second that was then and is no more. A second belonging to the long age of eternity, but never to be seen again. Life is bittersweet like that, isn't it?

As I realized this in all it's depth I realized how fast that second hand is actually moving. Tick tick moves us ever so closer to our destiny. Ever closer to our own death and the eternity beyond it. Are we prepared?

What cares do we have if we are facing death at this moment? Do we care if it rains tomorrow, or what about that bill we forgot to pay. What about the car repair that came at the worst time for our budget. So much of the strife of our daily lives fall away to the important things when death is at our door...our faith, our children, etc..

I pray that I spend each and every second of my life at least pining away for a glorious eternity. Not an austere saint, but one filled with life and an equal balance of recreation and piety that seems to be so rare in these turbulent times.

Next time you are sorrowing from a loss, or from some frustration with time. Take a look at your nearest clock with a second hand. Take a close look at that ticking and how fast it is actually moving and remind yourself, each of those seconds brings us one step closer to God, what could we be doing right now to help our souls and the souls of our children make it there with us?
