We all have our ups and downs so how do we know if we are really suffering from mood swings? If we are, then we want to know what are the best natural mood stabilizers that we can take, without going overboard with expensive and addictive medications.

If we suddenly demonstrate a sudden and rather abrupt change of our normal mood in which we become extremely irritable, sad, weepy, angry or tetchy, then we are probably suffering from mood swings. It will of course depend a lot on the severity and the length of the symptoms. Most mood swings occur in children with ADHD and those who are suffering from an anxiety or depression disorder.

It is interesting to note the research done on the role of sugar in mood swings. If we have children with ADHD, it is very important to ensure that they are getting protein at breakfast instead of overloading them with sugary cereals. This will cause a sugar spike later on and there will be mood swings. The protein is very useful in keeping blood sugar levels steady.

The Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah have uncovered research about sugar which suggests it may actually feed cancerous tumors so that is another reason to limit sugar intake.

We can keep a diary of our mood swings as that will help us to establish what is triggering these. Could it be diet? We may well find that it occurs after we have a sugar laden snack or drink or it could be connected with menstrual cycles in women. That will give us an idea of how we can utilize the most natural mood stabilizers of all, just by changing our diet. We can eat whole grains and lots of fruit and vegetables which will help to build the mood enhancing brain transmitters such as tryptophan and serotonin.

But why not try a supplement with built in natural mood stabilizers? This can be a great help. For example the amino acid methionine is also called SAMe. This is normally produced in the body and it can help to increase the amount of serotonin which is essential for good mood. It was found that those who were not getting enough Vitamin B were liable to be short of this and once they started taking the SAMe supplements, they got better. Research at the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that this supplement can be just as effective as certain anti anxiety medications.

As we have seen, diet is crucial and also the SAMe supplement can help greatly in getting back a balanced mood without having to worry about herbal remedies or other natural mood stabilizers The answer to our problem could well be in our own fridge.

Depression, anxiety and stress disorders can be managed successfully. Why wait any longer? Why not discover more about natural mood stabilizers by visiting my site. Robert Locke has written on stress and anxiety disorders for many years.
