Managing Bipolar Disorder - Your Health Professional Is Part of a Winning Formula

February 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

Having bipolar disorder can result in your life moving in one of two directions. The disorder can take complete control of your life. Alternatively, and much more beneficial to you, you can learn how to manager bipolar disorder. By managing the disorder well the effects of the manic depressive symptoms will be greatly reduced. This will greatly reduce the control bipolar disorder has over your life. One of the greatest allies you have in achieving this control is your health professional.

Once bipolar disorder is diagnosed the diagnosis is with you for life. In my experience this does not mean that the problems it can cause need control you for the rest of your life. I was diagnosed with manic depressive disorder (now known as bipolar disorder) way back in 1982. I researched the disorder. I worked closely with my health professional. I do this even now. However, I have not had a bipolar episode since 1997. This has given me back control of my life.

I am aware of a number of people who have regained control of their life after a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Some are personal friends. Some have told their story on the internet or in books. There seems to be common factors in all of these cases. There was a strong desire to regain control of our life. We worked hard in researching bipolar disorder. Apparently we all maintained a strong relationship with our health professional. These steps, working together, have combined to give us back control of our lives.

The relationship with our health professional has been an important factor in our regaining control of our lives. The information they provide about bipolar disorder is invaluable. The relationship must include excellent communication between both parties. The health professional must explain what each new treatment regime should achieve. This must include any possible side effects. In return the patient must explain, in detail, how the treatment is affecting them.

The excellent communications, both ways, enables the health professional to fully appreciate what the current treatment is achieving for their patient. They then know if the treatment is working and if there are any side effects causing concern. If the treatment is working any it might be worth attempting to minimize any side effects. This would allow the successful treatment to be continued. If the treatment is not working an alternate treatment regime can be prescribed.

If you are diagnosed with bipolar disorder it does not have to be a life sentence. Although the diagnosis is for life the disorder need not control you for the rest of your life. By taking the proper steps you can greatly reduce the effects manic depressive symptoms can have on your life. To regain control of your life you need:

1. A strong desire to do so

2. An excellent knowledge of bipolar disorder and

3. An excellent working relationship with your health professional.

Combining the above factors does enable you to manage your manic depressive symptoms. In turn this enables you to regain control of your life. I wish you all the best in your efforts to achieve this result.
