Guitar Toolkit: iPhone App Review

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Play the guitar? Have an iPhone? Then you definitely need to download and start taking advantage of the Guitar Toolkit available in the Apple App Store! The application costs $9.99 and you will be hard pressed to find another guitar application for the money. I've been a guitar player for approximately fifteen years and I've never used a more cost efficient, practical, and versatile tool.

Lets start with the "Global Settings" area. Here you can set the variables that will determine how the application functions at any given time. Lets start off with instruments. Guitar Toolkit supports a total of nine instruments ranging from your standard six stringed guitar all the way to the ukulele. How amazing is that?

Next in "Global Settings" is your tuning selection. Say you have your guitar tuned in standard but you want to play an Andy Mckee song next (an artist famous for his use of alternate tunings among other things). No problem, just select the required tuning and now the entire app has been modified for it. Use a capo much? The Guitar Toolkit allows you to configure the use of a capo into the global settings as well (yes really!). I'm sure very few people will go this far but you can even adjust the reference pitch. Most players will hardly ever stray from 440.0 standard but if you need 439.0 New Philharmonic then go for it. It's available along with all the other reference pitches. Left handed? You can even modify the application to take this into consideration.

Okay so what does the Guitar Kit tuner have to offer? Quite a bit actually. You can use either your iPhones built-in microphone, or you can get an adapter and plug your guitar directly into the device for more precise readings. The tuner is just about as versatile as any I have seen, and supports a variety of alternate and open tunings. Basically it gives you everything you need out of a tuner with a user-friendly interface.

Scales, scales and more scales! This app hosts a robust scale library that far exceeded my expectations. Virtually every scale pattern in every key and tuning is available. Seriously, if you have time to learn all the scale variants in this thing then you have way too much time on your hands! An additional feature utilizes the iPhones touch screen interface which allows you to tap each note in the scale to hear how it sounds. Try to do that with your big, bulky, book of scales!

Next, a fully functional and customizable metronome is included in the package. There's not really much detail to go into here... I mean it's a metronome. You can adjust the time signature... 2/4, 4/4, etc. If that monotonous clicking sound drives you insane, you can change it to a snare drum or a variety of other sounds that are available. Reverse sounds and flash accents are also available. Now that I think about it, it's really a pretty awesome metronome!

Chords... The story here is pretty much the same as it was on the scales. Practically every chord, in every position and key is available within the app. You can also strum the chords to hear how they sound as well. You no longer have an excuse to keep playing those same fourteen chords you've known since you were fifteen.

Well that's pretty much it... For ten bucks it's an amazing deal. Really like an amazing steal!
