App Maker Guideline: Common iPhone App Rejection Reasons and How to Avoid Them

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 189

Are you sure you're ready to submit your iPhone app? As a diligent and would-be successful app maker, you need to double-check if indeed your app is good to go. Otherwise, it would just be rejected and become "bad apples" like those apps from many reckless developers. Ensure fast approval by learning the common mistakes and reasons iPhone applications get rejected and how you could avoid them. Here are some of the things that really tick off Apple:

Technical issues - Technical problems like annoying bugs and constant crashes are a sure way to get a thumbs down from Apple. To avoid rejection and delay, make sure you thoroughly test your app under many extreme conditions. Use also various OS versions and network conditions. Apps crashing, freezes/not responding or just super slow--none of these would ever escape Apple's testers. So test, try and torture your app good! Repeat if necessary.

Different app icons - The icons/logos should match, which is 57x57 (small, used on the device) and 512x512 (large, used on iTunes/Store). If your images are dissimilar on the device and the App Store, Apple would decline your app, as it breaks the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). However, there's no clear rule about this in the HIG, just make sure you have the correct resolution to avoid rejection.

Trademark/Copyright violations - Skip using images, words and anything that Apple owns to prevent getting into trouble. Ensure all your names/logos/photos/graphics are yours and not ripped off from someplace else. The same goes for all drawings, sounds, videos, media, creative works and other copyrighted materials. In a nutshell, be original and familiarize yourself with copyright and trademark rules to steer clear of any violations--and rejections!

Inappropriate content - App sounding offensive or obscene? If so, don't be surprised if it would be automatically turned down. Adult material, racial slurs and any type of discrimination and defamation are just some of the negative matter an app maker should look out for. So before hitting the submit button, remember to keep it clean.

Misleading - Don't mislead Apple! iPhone applications that don't function like what they've been described are frowned upon by Apple. The screenshots (appearance and feel) should also be the same and consistent with those in the app. Use related keywords only. For instance, it's all about restaurant reviews, you certainly wouldn't use "concert" as a keyword. Just fulfill what your app's goal/s is/are to get approved.

Submitting your app to the App Store is the first step to potentially earning big in the mobile application industry. Get it right the first time and find your rightful place in the App Store by staying away from these common pitfalls or rejection reasons above.
