Changing the Way of Thinking About Mobile Management

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

Mobile management is a fact of life for corporate IT departments. These professionals must now monitor devices like smartphones and tablet computers as well as the more traditional laptops and netbooks. In addition to the devices themselves, IT staff must control telecommunications and data usage services. Many IT workers enjoy the technology involved and even like managing it. What they fail to realize is that today's IT is not the same as that of the past. IT now pertains to the consumption of relevant services, not the actual technology.

When we think mobility, the first thing that comes to mind is a mobile device. This is now quickly followed by thoughts of hundreds of thousands of apps. The truth is that mobility is no longer about these items, it is about people. People consuming IT and business services using company-provided (and sometimes, their own) devices. Most people do not view using their tablet or smartphone as a technology interaction. They see it as an IT and business service that helps them accomplish their job.

According to the 2011 IBM Tech Trends Report, the top concerns regarding mobile adoption are security, development costs for multiple mobile platforms, and integrating cloud services with mobile devices, respectively. There was only a one percent spread between each ranking, indicating that each of these is a concern for IT staff. Though there is no arguing that these are valid concerns, what about the outcomes? Being driven by technology is the old way of thinking. The focus must turn to the end user, the consumer of the services.

A switch from focusing on mobile devices to looking at the people using them is necessary. IT must become user-centric, something many IT departments claim to be but really are not. The real reason a company has the technology and delivers the services to begin with is people. IT workers must enable other employees to use mobile services and must support them in this use.

What does this require? A management of mobile applications and devices that corresponds with employee needs. The existing capabilities of the business must be expanded to include mobile devices. However, this is not enough. IT workers must use mobility to create new opportunities within the corporation. By doing this, they play a role in business transformation, allowing the company to adapt and flourish in this changing world.

IBM is one company that plans to do this and more to support clients in the future. Any business that wants to remain competitive should consider doing the same. Managing mobile devices and their usage can be complex in itself. Often, outside support is needed, especially if the company is growing or entering uncharted territory.

With a people-focused approach to mobile management, IT workers ensure the success of the company. Employees have the mobile devices and relevant services they require. IT workers focus on supporting them, which includes making internal systems mobile-friendly. By developing new business opportunities involving mobility, IT workers can shift from operational staff to leaders of transformation.

It is only a matter of time before IT and mobile management services are used interchangeably in the online business world. If you have not yet thought about integrating your mobile management services with IT supports, you need to visit Gill-Technoligies.com today!
