Comparing The Key Features Of The Popular iPhone 4S And The New Sony Xperia U

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

If you are in the market for a new smartphone, the chances are you have considered the iPhone 4S. As the most popular smartphone in the world, the latest iPhone has plenty of features make it an appealing device. In this article though, I will compare some of the key features of this device with an impressive new release from Sony, the Xperia U.

Screen

The iPhone 4S, like its predecessor, is well known for the quality of its touchscreen. The 'retina' display provides some of the best display quality out there, and is only rivalled by some of the newer releases from various manufacturers. It gets its 'retina' moniker due to the fact that the human eye cannot distinguish between individual pixels, which obviously contributes to the overall experience, especially when viewing photos, videos and playing games. The Sony Xperia P has a resolution of 480x 854, which is somewhat below the 640x 960 of the iPhone. However, this is still ample to provide great display quality. The screen is a category where the iPhone 4S comes out on top, on paper at least.

Operating System

The iPhone 4S has version 5 of the iOS operating system, which is Apple's smartphone and tablet optimised platform. This is well known for its ease of use, due largely to the simplicity of its layout and the intuitive nature of its apps. Apps are a major strength of the iPhone 4S, with access to over half a million apps from numerous categories. The Sony Xperia U runs the previous version of Android, called Gingerbread. This is a very popular smartphone platform, although it has been confirmed that the handset will support an upgrade to the newer version called 'Ice Cream Sandwich'. Android has plenty of fans, with much of its appeal coming from the fact that the platform is highly customisable and supports live widgets as well as apps, which are downloaded from Google Play which was, until recently known as Android Market. Both of these operating systems are very popular, and choosing between them comes down to personal preference. If you own other Apple devices like an iPad or MacBook, you may prefer the iPhone 4S, because of a wireless file sharing service called iCloud.

Camera

Arguably the most important feature for many people when choosing a new smartphone is the camera. On paper, the Phone 4S comes out on this category also. At 8 megapixels, it has Apple's most advanced camera technology to date. It has the ability to capture 1080p high definition video, and plenty of image enhancing apps available from the AppStore. The camera on the Sony Xperia U has a lower resolution of 5 megapixels; although it does come with all the image enhancing features you would expect such as autofocus, touch focus, image stabilization, face & smile detection and even the ability to capture 3D panoramic shots.

The iPhone 4S comes out on top in most areas of the phones' spec lists, but we must remember that this is Apple's flagship smartphone. The Sony Xperia U however is essentially and entry level Android device, which makes it all the more impressive. Both are great smartphones, but choosing between them is likely to come down to personal preference for either brand or operating system.
