Walk Your Way to a Healthier Life

February 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 143

According to an article on the "Everyday Health" website, studies have shown that exercise, for example walking three times a week, can reduce your risk of Alzheimer's by 30 to 50 percent. Thirty to fifty percent!! It's astounding to me that something so easy to do for most of us can have such a dramatic effect on our health. It's another great incentive to put on my sneakers and head out the door.

Or into the next room, as the case may be. For those living in places where winter makes walking outside a challenge, I recommend trying one of Leslie Sansone's Walking at Home DVDs. I recently bought a copy, and have really enjoyed the workout. She uses hand weights in the 1 to 3 pound range to incorporate an upper body workout along with the walking. There are other simple movements, like side stepping and kicks to add to the variety and keep things interesting. There are 1, 2 and 3 mile walks included, so on days where you have less time, you can still get a complete "walk" in. Leslie is enthusiastic and encouraging and makes it fun. You can also just listen to the music that will keep you walking at about a 4 MPH rate.

Anything we can do to get off of our butts and move is a good thing. I'm having fun with the pedometer I just bought. I'd like to get to the 10,000 step per day level, which is about 5 miles. I've been pleasantly surprised that I take about 7,000 steps in an average day without even trying to hit the 10,000 step level. It shouldn't be too difficult to get the extra 3,000 steps. When I go shopping later, I'll park farther away from the door and get some more steps in that way.

The great thing is, you can start wherever you are to get more fit. When I started on my personal campaign to get more healthy, I was having a lot of difficulty with my knees. Stairs, walking uphill and downhill were hard. Plus I'd get a bad ache in my lower back after I'd walked a little way, so I'd have to stop and sit for a few minutes. I was starting to believe that that was just my life from then on. I thought it would never get easier. But I've kept at it, and the results have been great. My knees are in better shape than they've been in years, and I can walk several miles without any back ache at all.

I have to give a lot of credit to my dog, Lily. She gets me out and walking when I might otherwise skip it. It's her favorite thing in the world, and I get such joy from seeing her joy. Whatever motivates you to get off your butt and start moving, whether it be a pet's joy, that dress you want to fit into or your achy knees, get out there do it! You will not regret it.
